I know of no other source for flat, round, carbide cutters as they have patents pending on the design. JimQuarles

Kennametal bits are like Wendy's hamburger compared to EWT's fillet mignon Kennametal bits are not as sharp as EWT's but they are cheaper. Don't take my word, give them a try.

Metal cuts use a very dull angle to keep from breaking the edge off. Wood cutters use a sharper edge so it will cut the wood instead of wearing it off. JimQuarles

give these people a call i have bought the square cutters from them way cheaper than ewt and find them quite satisfactory. 4 bucks compared to 13 or more.
I would be curious to know about the "patent" that ewt has on a carbide cutter insert is it the shape, the size of the insert, the cutting angle, or the carbide it self??

Being the hair splitter ---

the words on Craig's sales site are "patents pending".

Those words are intended to put those who may want to copy on notice that the process is under way but not yet completed.

the patent process is pretty long and expensive, but the market looks to be promising over the life of the Patent. When the patents runout, the copies become common.

The availability of only two round shape replacable tooling (EZ lathe Tools and the Hunter/Eliminator) suggests that the patent pending is pretty well founded. The knock off specialists (I think of PSI) are not going there.

Good products, with good protection for original thinking at a reaonsonable price.

The ones he sells are ground to a different cutting angle than the ones sold for planer use. The round and detail cutters are his own development. JimQuarles

I have three of Craig's tools - ci2, ci3, ci4. Most of the replacement cutters I've bought from him (or the ones he sells through woodcraft, when they have a sale and it's cheaper than buying from him direct, unfortunately). However, for the heck of it I bought some of the square cutters, that were advertised to be ground to the same angle as his, from a metal company that sells inserts.
Much cheaper price.

There is no comparison. I don't know what Craig has done to his, but they last much, much longer. IMO, it's worth the price difference to buy from him.

A sharpened 1/2" steel washer will work, but it won't work well. I think what the previous 10 posts or so are saying is that you're probably not going to find something else...at least not something else that works well. Wink
