A new C&T

A NEW Challenge & Trade!  We’ve done bowls, goblets, ornaments, wall hangings, pens, candlesticks, tops, boxes, cube, square round, twisted, enhanced, and inside/out.  This time we are going to do something different.  It was suggested by Derrick Scheuren.

The new challenge is to make an animal call.  (I don’t mean a wolf whistle.)

It could be a turkey call, or deer, crow, predator, elk, duck, goose...   just as long as it is intended to make an animal sound to entice some critters to come out in front of your gun or camera. (depending on your preference, I didn’t want this to sound too blood thirsty)  There is no long list of specifications.  It just has to be a correctly turned, working animal call.

OK!  Now who is going to sign up to try this?   Are you in?  It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned turner or a relative newbie.  All we ask is that you make a serious effort to do your best.

For those of you who are new to our C&T's,  You have been Challenged to create a piece to the best of your abilities that meet the specifications given, & once completed, you will Trade it to another participant either in a Round Robin, where A sends to B, B sends to C, C sends to D...  or you have a Partner to send your piece, and your partner will send you their piece.  Trade assignments are given after pieces are completed and photos posted.

This C&T will be a partner trade.  The gallery will open on Saturday, August 7 and your picture must be posted by midnight Sunday, August 8.  Participants will be assigned partners using random.org, and the pairings will be posted Monday, August 9.  If we have an odd number of entries, the last 3 will be done as a round robin.

Thank you Jim! Count me in. I will try to post up some links later on tonite to some of the game call parts suppliers taht I know of and have dealt with. Anybody else on here that turns calls that could post up some call makers suppliers for those of us who don't/haven't make/made calls would be greatly appreciated for sure.

Ok, here are some of the places where you can get game call supplies:

and the already mentioned Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

THO Game Calls (as well as their forum), Custom Calls Online forums, and Oldgobbler forums all have some pretty good tutorials on how to turn game calls. Brookside's site said they will be down from the 25th to the 30th, so If you know what you need by the 25th I'd order by then so that you have time to tinker.

Having been born in Brooklyn NY, I didn't grow up around game calls.

Some hints would be appreciated.

Correct me if I'm wrong

I turn a tube and pop in a reed and I have a call?

Almost like turning a pen?

Ron, what ever interests you.  I got Travis started with deer grunts and he went from there to duck calls.  I think he made about 4 different ones.  They really can become as addicting as pens.

I do believe in other forums that comments similar to this have started debates as to the difference between someone just turning wood[woodturner] for a call and someone turning a custom call as a callmaker.
Count me in on the challenge as it should be enjoyable  smiley=beer.gif
