Sounds like a good excuse for a wood trade.  Keep your eyes open.  It won't take long for us to reach that point.  Get your boxes ready.  We'll do this one quick.

Only about 2000 more posts until the 100,000 Posts Wood Exchange.  This event is coming up faster than even I thought it would.  Fun stuff happens when we work together.  Wood exchanges is just one of the many fun things.  Get ready, this exchange is going to have a twist.  BTW, the number varies depending on which boards you have access to.  The admins and mods have come up with away to get a good figure.  So, I'll let you know when we've reached it and what to do when we do reach that crazy number,
100,000

I think the best part of this 100,000th post is that the person who posts it wins a Powermatic lathe.  I'll certainly be posting like mad that day.  This is a brilliant site.

And because Bren made the donation he asked that not only the Admins and Mods be eligible that they also get double chances to win.  Thanks Bren.

Just beware...it is the Irish version of the lathe so it talks funny and is not used to warm weather  Wink
100,000 posts on this forum just seems amazing!  I have only been here 2 years and love it.  I think it is a testament to the Mod's and their hard work.  The rest of us get to reap the benefits!!!

Wouldn't it be gut-wrenchingly disappointing for the winner of the lathe if there was some previously unknown Customs and Excise clause that suddenly appeared and expressly forbade exporting Powermatic lathes from Ireland and also the substituting of a cash alternative?

Only about 1500 posts to go.  I can't believe how excited I am already.  When will it be?  September?  October?  January?

Here's a thought.  Post the date that you believe we'll get to the magic number.  Ties will be put into a drawing for a piece of wood that I'll donate to the cause.  This is, of course on top of the wood trade that we will do to celebrate.  Let's make the deadline to enter your guess on the date of the end of the day (11:59 PM) August 31.  That gives you 1 week to get your guess in.  Post you guess in this thread and I'll make a list of who has what date.  Please, one guess per person.

Looking forward to seeing who gets closest.  Just one more reason to be a part of the WR family.

I'll go for 9th September 2010 because that's my sister's birthday and she is always winning stuff.  If I do win please pass the blank onto the next nearest because the postage would be expensive and all I want is the glory of winning.

Any further guesses?  Time is running out.  We have about 1000 posts until we will make the announcement.  Time to make those last guesses to be in on the bonus package of wood that I'm sending out.  Guess the date, post here, and then we'll see who gets the closest.  You have nothing to loose.  What what's your guess?

Tuesday 8/31 is the last day to make your guess.  What about you Admins and Mods?  No guesses?  Would love to hear from a few more folk.  We have a good number, but I'm surprised that there aren't more of you taking a guess.  There is no charge.  We're only looking for about another 1000 posts.  When will we get there?  Who will have the closest guess?  The tension is mounting.  Don't let the deadline pass you buy.  You can't play if we don't get your guess before mid-night tomorrow.  Don't ask me Wednesday if you can get in.  That will be too late.  Make your guess before Tuesday is over and you are in the mix.  Will you be the recipient of some FREE KY WOOD?

All time is up.  Any further guesses will be ignored.  We did have 2 guys with identical guesses.  We'll see how that goes.  May  have to have a tie breaker, but we'll worry about that if that date actually is the date.  Anyway, roughly 800 more posts until the moment of truth.  I hope everyone is getting excited.  Then again, would wouldn't be.  There's nothing to loose here.  Only gain as long as you play.

Don't forget that we'll be having an exchange as well.  The guessing of the date is only for the bonus wood I'm sending out.  We'll start to make the exchange list soon, so be watching for it.  It won't be long.

When I look at the bottom of the Forum Home, I see "Our users have made 99084 Posts", making it 915 to go as of my post. Are you using a different count than the one displayed on the home page? Just curious.

While you guys are getting all excited about the 100,000 posts count, don't forget that next year has a couple of other milestones to it.

Feb 21, 2011: WR's 10 year anniversary.

April 4 2011: 7 years of WR in it's current rendition.

(P.S. WR as a whole actually passed 100,000 posts a while ago if you include the 4,000+ posts we lost to the hacking back in 2004 Wink)

Mike and Len, you bring up the question that we discussed before I decided how to determine this.  It partly depends on how you are registered.  We are taking the total posts and subtracting the Admin and Mod boards that the rest of the world has no access to, nor do the posts show in your counts.  TOT doesn't show in your personal post count, but does show in the total count only if you have it open.  So there are some differences in what shows on your home page.

There you have it.  Admins have determined the calculation method that will be our official number.  As of this post, we have 700 posts to go.  I may do something really crazy that day.  Who knows, I may even go turn for a while.

Chris, great to hear from you.  I haven't been checking to see if you've been checking in from time to time or not.  Loving the leather work.  Your detail has really gotten better.   Please stay in touch.  We miss you around here.  Would love to see more of your work from time to time.  Would also like to know more about what is going on with you.  Drop me an email or PM, please.  Let me know what is going on with life.  Would love to hear from you.

Hey Rev, how's it going!?  Bunches of things have changed but I'm still the same for the most part.  I've gotten a dozen emails and such since my post yesterday so I'll put something up in the Intro board to catch everyone up and not jack too many turning related threads.  Wink

Still amazes me this place is going on 10 years and still growing.

Just shy of 500 to go.  You folks are being rather talkative these days.  Seems you're getting excited about it.  Just cut some beautiful cherry today.  Think I'll share some of that with the winner of the bonus box.  Who will be the closest?  Stay tuned to find out!

Just a few over 200.  I'm thinking maybe Wednesday we'll hit this milestone.  Better than the Roman soldiers calling on innocent by-standers demanding them to carry the weapons and supplies to the next milestone.  At least with this milestone there will be goodies shared about.

The way I count things, it looks like we have crossed the line of notoriety in the last few minutes.  I have 9/9 showing on my calendar.  According to the list, Brendan is the winner.  He is the only one who guessed that we would reach 100,000 on this date.  CONGRATULATIONS!  You are now infamous.

Brendan has also said that we should pass the wood along to another since the postage across the pond would be so high.  Let's see.  We could cut the blank up into pen blanks and send one to each person on the list.  Or we could go back to the list and see what is going on.

Kathy's guess is 3 days later.  Kevin made a guess that was only 2 days before.  Looks to me like Kevin made the second place guess and will get the bonus wood.  Kevin, send me a PM with your mailing address so that I can put your cherry blank in the mail.

Now let's celebrate this mile stone.  ANNOUNCING THE 100,000 POSTS CELEBRATION WOOD TRADE!  Since today is the 9th, let's make the dead line to join the trade the end of the day on 9/18/10.
Send me a PM with your name, mailing address, what you will most likely send, and any wood allergies you may have.  I will add your name to a master list in this thread.  Once the dead line has passed I will put all the names into a random list generator and will match the names up.  You will receive a name and address to send a FLAT RATE BOX to.  You will need to have your box in the mail by 9/25.  All wood should arrive to its intended destination no later than 9/30.  It really is like another Christmas present coming in the mail.  So much fun to see what arrives.  Who is going to play?  Will you?  You can't join the fun if you don't get you name on the list.  Get your info to me asap so you don't forget and get left out.
CoolRev. Doug Miller P.S.  I'm sorry to say that because of the extreme costs of mailing wood across international lines, we will not be able to accommodate our friends in other countries.  Canada is the one exception, requiring only a small amount of additional postage.  I hope you'll understand.  Future C&T's will include you matched with those who are able and willing to pay the extra postage to send turned works to you.

I was very excited about this event because it is a wonderful milestone for WR.  On the 18th September I will have been a member here for two years and it has been really enjoyable to watch WR grow, almost exponentially in recent months, and to see the same camaraderie now as when I first arrived.

Ron and the Mods (sounds like a 60's band) are often complimented on the work they do and deservedly so because we never hear one whine about the effort they make on our behalf.  So, again, great work guys, thank you.

Brendan.

LOL, before the fun started I asked Rev Doug to send the wood to the next nearest if I should hit the correct date because this was just a bit of a laugh and I didn't want him penalised for his generosity.  I am quite content to bask in the glory of victory but my wife will probably cure that when she arrives home this evening and sees me in my crown and robes.

Thanks Rev. Miller for doing this and the rest of the staff (and members) for doing what you do... I love this place.  smiley=thumbsup.gif

Who else?  There is still plenty of time, but if you wait you may well let the deadline slip by.  Send your name, address, wood you're most likely to send and any allergies you might have to me via PM.  I don't want to hear any crying if you miss the dead line.

8?  Is that all who want to participate in the wood exchange?  We had 18 to guess when we might hit the 100,000 mark.  Now only 8 want to play our game of exchange?  You have until tomorrow morning to get your information to me via PM.  I've got to go to bed a little earlier than normal so you reap the reward of extra time.

Don't waste another minute!  Send me a PM with your name, address, wood you're most likely to send, any wood allergies you might have.

I will cut off the entries and draw names tomorrow morning.  Get that information to me and let the fun begin.

BTW, I'll let you know what the twist that I mentioned earlier in the thread is when I close the entries.  I'll give you a hint:  we've talked about it for years here on WR but have never done it.  Now we will.  I'm so excited.

Sadly, I just don't have any wood to send. Everything I've made so far has been from construction cut-offs that a friend is bringing me. Embarrassed It's mostly 2x4s and beam cut-offs.

I've been watching for flotsam on the sides of the roads, and keeping an eye open for any local trees that come down. Hopefully, I'll have some decent specimens for the next trade.  Wink

Sorry for the hold up.  I haven't forgotten you yet.  It really is coming.  I've just gotten tied up with life today.  The work must go on.  The delay just adds to the anticipation.  Are you getting nervous?  Excited?  Look for pairings to be posted soon.  Good night for now.

I know, I know.  I am so late with this.  Big day Satruday, Sunday and again today.  We did have two more players join in the fun though.  So, here is the list.

Rev. Doug Miller
Jim Quarles
Kathy Marshall
Walt Nollan
Kevin Stanbary
Cathy Schaewe
David Seaba
Ron Sardo
Scott Wheeler
Dale      Gillaspy

All of you should have received a PM from me by now.  In it you have the person you are sending wood to.  You also now know the twist.  Get your wood in the mail ASAP so that the recipient will have as much time as possible to get their work done.

Each of you also have a second address to which you will send that completed piece.  There are no guide lines on the piece that you will turn.  You simply do your best.  The point is to turn a piece for someone else.  You will also receive a turn piece.  This way, each of us not only gets to turn a piece of wood that we don't usually, but we'll get a piece from another turner for our Rogue's Gallery.  The way I look at it, Christmas done come twice and not a flake of snow on the ground.

Rule 1:  Have fun
Rule 2:  Enjoy the process
Rule 3:  Stick to the dead lines (the hardest for me for some reason)

This is going to be fun!

Kevin, either of the two medium boxes has been our tradition.  I think they are $10.75 to mail out unless you do your postage online.  Saves you about $.50.  Clear as mud?

Got my box at 5:00pm this evening.  Thanks Ron.   A beautiful piece of Elm and some rosewood.  By 8:00pm the elm was cored into three bowls.  I turned and sanded the largest bowl and it soaked over night in walnut oil.  I will work on the other two bowls today and figure out what to do with the Honduras Rosewood.

The Honduras Rosewood would make great finials or pens. I made a couple of small thin square plates with the wood which turned out real nice.

Ron,  Made a pen this morning after turning the second bowl that was core out last night.  Engraved a "WR" in it and filled with turquoise.   I almost want to keep it for myself.   The 2nd bowl has been soaking in oil all day.  The smallest bowl had a knot that was breaking up so it got filled and is drying.

Here we go!  I had work hard to get this done before traveling this weekend.  I got a box from Ron Sardo.  He sent a big hunk of Elm and some Honduras Rosewood.  Out of the elm I cored three bowls.  They measured  4, 6 and 10" in diameter.  The smallest bowl got a lid and finial of the rose wood.  The 10" & 6" bowls are finished with walnut oil.  I also made a pen with the rosewood and engraved WR into it and filled with turquoise.  I hope my secret Santa or elf.  I hope you all enjoy!

Just a reminder that you either should have received or will be in the next couple of days.  Kathy, expect yours to arrive Tuesday.  Anyway, start working on those projects to send off to the next person.  I'll get the gallery for this opened that last week of the month.  You have plenty of time, but not if you delay too long.  If you're like me, the turning won't take so long.  It's the finishing that seems to take for ever.

Turn your piece, get it finished, even take your pics, but hold on to those pics until we get the gallery opened up.  I know some of the pics are already up.  That's ok, but let's hold on to the rest of those pictures until the gallery is open.  I'm excited, how about you?

Don't worry about it Jim,

I roughed out a cherry box that I'll send out. That is as long as the person receiving this won't mind.

I looked, and I have the other end of that half log.  It's only a little shorter, cause I cut the last one to just fit the box.

Now to figure out what to turn for part 2....

How are those projects coming?  Not much time left.  Some of you have been done for a while now.  Others are probably like me.  Life has SO gotten in the way of turning.  I haven't started yet.  Maybe tonight?  Lots of ideas.  Even a plan.  Could be a late night or two coming up.

GO GET IN THE SHOP!

Alright, the gallery is now open.  You folks who have completed your work can begin to post them in the gallery.  The rest of us have to get on the ball and get those projects completed.

If by chance you have forgotten who it is you are sending the completed work to, please feel free to ask.  I do still have the list.  We are all getting excited that we are about to see all the various pieces done with the wood that was traded.

OOPS.  Now what did I do with that piece?  More important, what did I do with the camera?

Based on the gallery, I'm not the only one running behind on this one.  Sorry folks!   Embarrassed

Was trying to finish up last minute and ended up with a nearly catastrophic launch.  Piece ended up wedged between the rough concrete floor and the front trans-axle on my wife's Jeep... <mental note: get the car out of the garage before turning on the power tools>

Slight design change to the piece and had to start over sanding.  Also built a donut chuck to avoid the same problem again...  bang head

Hope to be able to finish it up in the next day or 2...

Am I the last to get mine completed?  Finish is curing now before I buff it a bit.  Lots of design changes and presented several challenges.  But, it is done and has finish on it.  I'll post pics once it is buffed in a couple of days.

Not a happy camper...

Finally went to finish up a bowl out of the bonus piece of cherry from Rev. Miller...  Went to clean up a ridge about halfway up the side, taking a very light cut with my easy finisher and then....  bang head

I'd try to glue it back together if I could find all the pieces.  Embarrassed

Happened to me 2 weeks ago.  The chinaberry that I was turning seems to have warped a touch in the turning process.  I went back to make that last clean-up pass when I heard the tick-tick-tick that should have warned me.  About that time it went PLOWY.  Never did find that last little piece.  Sorry to hear that it went up in smoke on you.  Know that it happens to all of us from time to time.
