Hope everyone is ready for a new Challenge & Trade.  Your new challenge is to turn a Christmas Ornament.  Aah, but not just any Christmas ornament.  Similar to last year’s C&T, it must be made from at least 2 different woods or other materials in any configuration. Whether laminated, segmented, mortise/tenon joint, or whatever.  And it must have some sort of hollow center. Such as, inside out or hollowed.

We will open the gallery on Saturday, November 13.  Pictures must be posted by midnight EST Saturday, November 20.  Also a PM with your mailing address must be received by me by the same deadline.  Pairing assignments will be posted Sunday.  Unlike last year, we want everyone to get these before Christmas, so all packages need to be postmarked by Wednesday, November 24.

As was implied by the Subject Line, this will be a Mystery Round Robin style trade.  Everyone who participates will be assigned another member to surprise with their Ornament.  Don’t mention to whom or where you are sending it.  Everyone needs to post here when they ship, and again when they receive their ornament.

Please sign up here if you plan to participate,
the more,
the merrier.
But if your picture is not posted, and you haven't PM'ed your address to me, by the deadline, you will not be assigned a trade.  Also indicate in your PM whether you are willing to pay the additional postage to trade with our overseas members, if we have any participate.

OK!  You have about 4 weeks to do this.  Let's get out there and turn some ornaments!

For those members who are new and wonder what a C&T might be, here is an explanation.

C&T stands for Challenge & Trade.  We define the parameters of a challenge for you to perform.  After completion, you post a picture in the new C&T area of the Gallery.  Participants will receive a PM with name and address of the member they are to send the completed item.  They will receive one from the same person if we are doing partners, or a different person if we do a Round Robin trade.  If we are doing partners and have an odd number complete the challenge, we end up with the 3 final members in a Round Robin.  Sometimes we do a Mystery Round Robin where nobody knows whose piece they will receive until they get it.

Me, me, me, me......

Also, would it be possible to ask participants to not name the person they got their ornament from when posting it's arrival, just post a "thanks it's arrived and it's lovely" message to help Mods monitor progress and send a PM to the maker instead please?

Won't folks be able to simply visit the gallery and match up the photos & names anyway though?

I'm in Jim.  Pm coming at ya.

Chris,

I meant a thank you on the boards... "I got my ornament, looks great, thank you $*+#^"... without actually posting the name of the sender and a private message to the sender if the recipient wished.  It worked well in previous C&Ts because nobody knew which piece a person had got.

Good suggestion Bren.  That way people won't be trying to figure out what they are getting by what has already been received.  After all have been acknowledged, then you can name whose ornament you got.

I just checked a couple of shipping estimators for UPS and FedEx, and they both said it would be nearly eighty bucks to ship a 1 pound parcel to Ireland!  Shocked I'm kind of shocked. Is there any way to ship it there for less than that? I kind of thought those two were the cheapest game in town, but maybe that's not the case?

If it's that much to ship overseas, then sadly, it would be prohibitively expensive.  Sad

Mike,
It cost me almost $45 to ship a 15lb box to Bre in Ireland. I used a USPS international flat rate box like this. with these as long as it fits in the box it ships. A lot cheaper then anyone else.

It cost me, last year, about $4 to ship a Christmas dec to the US. I am further away than Brendan, they weigh next to nothing, so not too bad at all. IMHO smiley=beer.gif

Yeah, it's nowhere near that much.  I just shipped 2 tank bibs to UK.  The box was 18x18x8 and weighed 4.25 pounds.  With tracking and $350 insurance it was only $49...that's way more than a single ornament would need/cost.  On the other side of the specturm, I shipped a couple of my burnishers to NZ, UK, Ireland and Sweden.  They are a bit lighter than an ornament but they only cost me $3.20 to ship to each of those places.  The bugger of it is the customs form.

Something to keep in mind when shipping international is there may be an additional delay in delivery due to customs inspection.  Make sure to mark the form as a gift with a low value.  The bibs hit UK customs on 10/15 and as of today were still being "inspected" even though I paid for 3-5 day delivery.  Sad

I shipped an 11.10oz parcel to Australia today, it cost $9.04

The only thing that gave me problems was sending to an island  someplace.... Turned out had to address it to Spain. Once the gal at the po figured it out things were fast easy and cheap.

I am hoping we get a lot of members in this one. But, was thinking this morning, seems to me there is a fair amount of members all over the world, like the fella who did the globe puzzle, and a guy from Norway or Finland who was on the boards a  while ago and it seems like there is a few Irish turner members... Not to mention all the gals who have been on the boards lately...... Sure would be fun to get more of these people in this...

lol Leo. I was really close to finishing the cutting on mine, when I had a catastrophic catch/explosion on one of the components. It will look slightly different than it did in my head when it started, but I'm discovering that's the case no matter what I'm turning.   Grin

rofl!! Nah, it just shattered into splinters and the substantial portion just fell into the bed of shavings. I never turn without my shield on though. I've already taken some large chips to the shield that would have really made for a bad day had I not been wearing it. Sometimes, when I'm roughing square stock, I'll get shards if I close the flute too much, and they really fly!

I made the thinnest turning I ever did yesterday out of spalted Beech and I was really thrilled.  Then I decided to give it a wee extra polish by hand (you know where this is going!) and, like a wet bar of soap, it shot out of my hands and bounced out the shop door and along the tarmac driveway.  It is still is one piece but with added 'character' now.

Back to the lathe...

LOL, I need to learn to read!  I've been frantically trying to get ornaments done between funerals (4 this week and 2 more tomorrow and Monday) and just managed to get one finished and ready to glue (brought the parts in to warm up) a few minutes ago.  I jumped on here to make sure I would hit the deadline tonight and realised the deadline was the date the gallery opened.  Kinda relieved now so I'm going to try to make a few better ornaments.  I'm trying something new so more time to learn about the material is good.

I've got 18 addresses, and one who said they were in (Andy) but never PM'ed their address.  So far we have 5 completed ornaments posted.  You have 4 more days left to finish your ornament and post the picture.

If you didn't sign up and now decide you want to participate, go back and read the rules in the first post of this thread.  There is still time to turn an ornament and post its picture in the 2010 Christmas Ornaments C&T gallery.  Pictures need to be posted by Midnight, Saturday, and I need your mailing address PM'ed to me.

2 DAYS LEFT!

We have 8 pictures posted now, that leaves 9 more to go since one drop to out for family reasons.  Let's see some more pictures in the gallery.

It's not too late to sign up.

We are waiting on Jeff and 3 others that said they were participating.  I'm not going to stay up late tonight, I will be assigning your trades between 11 and 12 Noon tomorrow EST.  So you really have until then to post your pictures.  Once trades are assigned, it is too late.

Everyone who submitted a picture has received a PM with a name and address for sending their ornament.  The selection was made using random.org with one adjustment for overseas shipping.  If you did not specify that you were interested in sending international mail, you were not assigned a foreign address.

Please make sure you get them to the Post Office by closing time on Wednesday.  For those of you who are shipping out of the country, be sure to note on the outside that the package contains a home made gift.

Please post when you have shipped your package, and again when you receive your gift.  Do not make any mention of your partners' names until everyone has acknowledged receipt.

With 16 members, this C&T had one of the highest level of participation in almost 4 years.  Thank you all for participating.

For those of you who missed out on the excitement this time, try one.  We have C&T's 3 or 4 times a year, so another one is coming soon.  We don't ask for perfection, we only challange you to make your best effort.  Some of the C&T's ask only for basic skills, and some get more complicated.  There is a lot of excitement waiting to see what you are going to get.  It gives you an opportunity to receive a piece from another turner.  Most of us have our "Rogues' Gallery" prominently displayed.

Just to add... for international shipping please keep valuation low or zero.  If you value the piece high the recipient will pay taxes and handling fees.  I think the limit is about $30 but over that taxes apply.  With homemade items I do a zero valuation and write 'NCV' (No Commercial Value).

Also, please tick the 'Gift' box on the declaration or the piece may be valued by Customs and taxes applied as they feel fit.

Gota love that PC jargon. When they're a man, we call them the "mailman". When they're a woman, it is "postal worker", "postal delivery technician", and others. "A rose by any other name....."

Mine made to the post office this morning.  The Postalette I spoke to didn't have nice legs but she talked about woodwork with me for awhile and I think she tried to adopt me Cheesy

Sorry for missing the trade folks.  The piece never made it to the second wood phase.  Between my main design computer eating it's own logic board and holiday orders coming in I've been swamped and forced to use a demon-spawned from hell anti-technology box (4 year old PC with Adobe graphics products that shall not be named out of fear that they will continue to torment me).  Funny thing is, I never would have thought taking up leatherworking would get me so much turning business.

If they are not delivered in the mail by Christmas Eve, we will let everyone else acknowledge theirs.  I think people have a pretty fair idea of whose ornaments are still in transit.

Feel free to let everyone know whose ornament you received and thank them.

I am sure that it's no secret, everyone has figured out that Andy and I are still waiting on ours from across the pond.  Eventually, the powers that be will decide to deliver ours.(I hope!)  It is just taking longer than normal.

I want to repeat my thanks to all those who participated.  You don't have to be an expert to sign up next time we have a C&T.

I received Ed Weber's ornament with the Celtic knot. Very nice work and I love it. Right now it is in the prominent display area over the fireplace.

I had a lot of fun with this and will definitely participate in more of these where I can.

Thanks to all who participated. You've all been an inspiration for current and future ideas.

Also to all, may you be blessed with good health, good friends, love of your families, and may your trips into the vortex be fruitful.

Merry Christmas to all.

I got a beautiful ornament from Andy Lasslett.  It is right up close to the angel on our tree and is attracting lots of complimentary remarks from friends and family.  Thank you Andy, great work.

Jim,

Sorry.  I sent 2 packages to USa on the same day and the other hasn't arrived in Minnesota yet.  I think it's Chuck's fault.

I received my trade ornament from Jim Quarles in record fast time, it's hung from that moment on a branch of our living room tree.
I would like to say that the ornament Jim made is a fine piece of turning made with precision and quality. Thanks Jim and once again a big  smiley=thumbsup.gif to all who participated and/or enjoyed the trade. Happy Holidays

David Hamann did a great job with the ornament that I received.  Fit and finish is very nice.  So much better than in the picture.  Thanks a lot, David.  It is hanging on my tree now.  These C&T's are so much fun.  learned about turning the ball, finial and drop style ornaments today.  I should be doing some of those next year.  Quite fun really.  Then again, the little bird house ornaments are a blast to make as well.

Thanks Jim,

I am just relieved that it finally arrived.  I had forgotten about Marks ornament with the acrylic because, if I had remembered, I would have copied his icicle.

Brendon, I have to agree with Jim. There is no reason to copy. You've made an excellent ornament all on your own. In some ways, I like the frosty look of your drop better.

Fantastic work mate!

I forget to mention,

In Clark also sent me some pen blanks, even one of ebony.............thank you so much Ian  smiley=thumbsup.gif Smiley. This type of wood is a complete mystery to me, so I will only use it for maybe very posh finials on special items.

Brendan also sent me some lovely pieces and extra bits, last C & T., but it never arrived  Cry, thank you anyway Bre., I have printed the picture, so I have it in 1 dimentional form anyway...or is it 2d ?  smiley=beer.gif

Mine has not yet arrived at its destination. !!!!! Cry

Wow! The holiday season is over?!?!?!  My wife took down the decorations today while I was at work so all intentions of getting a "treed" picture of my lovely C&T ornament - courtesy of Jeff McDonald - are over for this year.

A big Thanks to Jeff for the ornament, it really showed me I have some room to improve in the finishing dept.

smiley=lolk.gif

Happy new Year everyone!

I got my great ornament from Mike Oyama and it is really cool.  The design was very unique and well turned and (as with all of these C&T's) I got a chance to look close at someone's work which is very inspiring.
Thank you very much Mike!  Well done!
I wish I would have gotten a picture of it on the tree but everything is packed up and it will have to wait until next year.

Ian- I am glad you like the ornament.  Thanks for the nice comments.

Happy New Year!

Thanks to all from me. It was fun. For those who've gotten their's late or put them away, I've left mine on the mantle so I can look at it any time. It doesn't look out of place because we kind of have a turning shrine up there with all of the small pieces I've made or been given.

Anyone that has suggestions for projects for future C&T's, please PM me.  Remember that they generally have to be something that doesn't require any extraordinary skills or equipment.  Many of our members still use 10" lathes, and we encourage all to participate regardless of skill level.  We only ask that you make your best effort.

How about something simple, like spinning tops, minimum sizes to make it worth it, could be normal hand ones, ones you put in a handle and pull a string, I can't throw the throwing ones for my life, so don't know if I get them right....... Cry. These would be cheap on postage too.

or :-

Cup and Ball toys, like shown in the video by Bob H. ? or a variation on that.

Or :-

Any toy ??

Just my 2c. Toys do sell well on stalls and may be good practice for those who like to sell some of their stuff, from time to time. ??

BTW. My xmas dec. is still up on the tree, we have still got what they call 3 Kings to go yet, on 6th. Jan. oh it's a long holiday over here !!!!!! Cool
