Turning al fresco
12/05/10 at 07:12:58

Since I started turning, my table saw has had to share a storage/laundry area off of my carport with my lathe, both on mobile bases. Both get wheeled out to the carport for use.

Ever since moving to Florida I've been admiring (ok, lusting for) all of the great shops I see on this and other web sites. Heck, I would even drool over a 2-car garage. I had grand plans to add a shop to my house, but life and local building codes intervened.

Recently though I had an epiphany. I was reading about various basement shops and looking at the photos here of a spic and span shop with a chip curtain surrounding the lathe and the thought hit me that I don't think I'd switch shops with them even if I could. I would enjoy  turning nearly as much in a closed room or surrounded by a shower curtain.

Sure, it's a pain to have to wheel my tools out and to wheel them back when I'm done. But, when doing woodworking and turning I have fresh air, sunshine, and the neighbors can (and do) stop by to chat and see what I'm working on. I'm sheltered enough to still work if it rains, and cold temperature are seldom a factor here. Since my 'shop' is the front of my house it keeps me motivated to sweep up every nite when I'm done.

My drill press, band saw and sharpening station are all indoors in a small room off of the kitchen. They generate chips and shavings, but none  of them generate excessive dust, so a dust collector keeps things pretty well in check.

Maybe someday I'll have a great big shop, but when I do it will hopefully have big doors all around.

Nothing wrong with that arrangement, and in fact, it's better than what I had.

I turned in the open air on my back deck for several years. Covered my lathe up with a plastic storage tote and some heavy duty tarps when I wasn't working and it worked out fine.

Looks good to me.  No worries about dust collection and respirators.  Wouldn't work up here, I think our high today was 18.

Richard

I only work outside and, other than not being able to work really late, I love it! Nothin like singin birds and whirring motors! (This means I have to lift my lathe out of the garage everyday that i turn and put it back, but its good for the arms)

And Lark
The high in Austin was 60 today! The leaves dont fall off of the oaks till january!

It's 14F outside and there's a foot of snow...

I need to move somewhere warm.

If it's any consolation, we're getting down to 41 tonite, so I probably won't be outside turning. Even wore long pants to work.

Freezing down in Cayman today it only reached about 78.  Grin

I am also outside with my lathe it on the back porch.  It was quite windy this weekend and I thought I was turning in a cyclone the way the wind swirled around me.  A Mask was a must.

I actually covert my friends shop.    LOL
