Traditional grind gouge on the inside of a bowl

I didn't have a "one shot" take that I was happy with for using a traditional grind gouge on the inside of a bowl, so I have put together this segment from three different sessions:

Bob,

That was great thanks.  Things like that are a great help to us newer turners.  Thanks for sharing.

Bob as always, your videos are very informative. Not to mention the fact that they are superbly presented.

I have 1 question for you. What shape flute do you like for a traditional grind bowl gouge?

Thanks,
Mike

Hi, Mike:
I very much prefer a "V" flute on my traditional grind gouges.  I find it very difficult to grind a straight wing on a "U" flute gouge and usually wind up with a wing with a concave curve to the cutting edge.  That said, the gouge I was using all through this video is a "U" flute 1/2" gouge.

Take care
Bob

Very informative video as usual, Bob. I've never used a traditional grind bowl gouge, but now I have a much better idea of how to do it. I'm particularly interested in the finishing cut you do with the trailing wing. I'll have to get a traditional gouge one of these days and give it a spin. (I guess I could re-grind one of my Thompsons, but I don't want to lose the steel.) Wink

As usual... a very good video Bob.

Well Vaughn... I'll have to try something other than the traditional grind one of these days but, like you, I'd hate to loose the steel re-grinding what I have... I guess I'll order some duplicate gouges sometime in the future.

My thoughts exactly.  Wink  Gouges are like clamps...can't have too many.
