@ work we typically "volunteer" whoever called in sick that day.

As in "Bob said he was willing to do that, just send him an email. He's working from home today."

We work on a "did I step forward or did everyone else just step back?" philosophy.

HEAR YE!    HEAR YE!

Announcing the 3000 Member Wood Trade!

We are just a few members short of 3000 on Woodturners Resource.  That is a huge step in the life of any site.  So, we want to begin a series of celebrations for several big events in WR's life.

Here's the deal:
For the next several days, if you choose to participate, you may send your name, mailing address, Type of wood you will send, and any wood allergies that you might have, to me via PM ONLY.  Cut off will be a day or two after we actually hit 3000 members.  I will give notices of the cut-off as we approach the dead-line.

Once you have entered, go by your local Post Office and pick up one of the mid-sized flat-rate boxes.  Sorry, but Chuck said that he will not personally deliver all those boxes.  (Something about a 10 mile limit per day on his kicks)

Take the box home, fill it with some of your local wood, and have it ready for the address that I will send out to you once we have closed the entries.

Once you get a name and address, take your box back to the PO, pay the postage, and put that wood in the mail.  Your entry is your word that you will send a box of wood out.  Everyone pays the same amount.  Everyone sends wood out.  Everyone receives wood in.

A few side notes:
Sorry, but after much consideration, those outside the boarders of the USA will not be able to participate.  Postage costs (both ways), customs, and regulations simply cause this kind of trade to be prohibitive.

A few of you would like to trade the larger, more expensive, flat-rate boxes.  If you will note that in your PM I will match you folks together as much as possible.

While I know it is extra work, PLEASE remove all bark from your blank.  The EAB seems to live just under the bark as do many of the other destructive insects.  Removal of the bark will help to insure that we don't accidentally transport any destructive critters across state lines.

We will not be turning this wood and sending it back out.  Once you get it, the blank is yours to do with and when you wish.

This trade is meant to be fun and a celebration of the site's 3000 members.  We have found over the years that the more participants we have, the more fun it is.  Jump right in.  The variety of wood you have available does not matter.  The idea is to make some trades.  You may get some wood that you've turned lots of.  But you may also get some wood that you've dreamed of getting but have never had opportunity to turn.  I make every effort to not have anyone get the same wood that they are sending out.

I'll keep a running list of the participants posted.  If you send me a PM and don't see you name pop up on the list within 24 hours, you might want to send me another to make sure I got it.

LET THE FUN BEGIN!

I agree that a wood trade would cost too much to go abroad.!

Does anyone, outside the USA/Canada want to do a C&T. just to do something with the 3,000th member thingy. Smiley

How about a cup and ball, Spinning top box or whatever you think !! Smiley

Should I start a new thread for this Rev.?? Cool

I would like to participate but all the wood I have was given to me and has been used. It might be months before I can find anything worth while other than a couple of small blocks of myrtle which I have. Is there a time limit on this?

Scott, we're at 2988 members now.  I suspect that the first of next week we'll hit 3000.  I'll start at that point with a 2-3 day count down to close the entries.  Once the entries are closed, they are closed and the wood will need to be shipped asap after I get the information out to every one.  So, yes there is a time limit.  But that limit is a few days off in the future.

BTW, I personally love myrtle.  Don't know anyone who doesn't like it.  What you have and/or can get hold of to fill a flat-rate box with will work.

Yeah but you guys have got some pretty amazing wood compared to what we can get here. Its very hard to even come by any burled woods here. I know where there are a few oak burls but I don't know who owns the land where they are.

I think everyone says the same thing about there country. I don't know what  grows there but I bet there is some great wood, Sometimes we just got to look in our own back yards. I need to find out more about what grows around here besides conifers. Where I live we have a lot of the same weather 80 inches a year is common so this summer I am going to try to get some more local wood. You can't cut a burl (or should NOT) from a living tree but some people here do it anyway. So look for dead or dying tree's, maybe you will get lucky!

I'd never cut anything from a standing tree. If it has fallen or has been removed I'd ask for a few pieces. If i was let loose with a chainsaw on those oak burls I'd be shot  smiley=lolk.gif

Keith,

I did a search on trees in Ireland.  Would you believe there are 2867 different varieties here?  They must all be in Phoenix Park...they're not up here.

Cool.

I don't have much dry wood but I have willow, cottonwood, plum, Chinese elm, and some dono that is green. What should I pack up? Note that if you want a single blank the size of the inside of the box, it would have to be either cottonwood or willow.

What would people like in sizes and types?

Sorry no exotics. I use strictly wood that I've picked up from people who have cut down trees that either died, were knocked down by storms, or removed to provide space for something else.

Robert, if you're in, you need to send your mailing info, along with what you are sending, any allergies you may have, and if you will use a med or lg flat rate box, in a PM to me.

I'll be posting a count down post soon.  Get those PM's coming so that no one is left out.

ATTENTION!  ALL MEMBERS, NEW AND LONG TERM ALIKE!

Woodturners Resource has arrived at a very important milestone:  WE NOW HAVE 3000 REGISTERED MEMBERS.

As most of you know, we will have a wood trade to celebrate this occasion.  Many of you have already signed on for this trade.  Congratulations, all you have left to do is wait to see who you are sending wood to.  For the rest of you, if you want to be in on all this fun, send me your mailing address, the wood(s) you're going to send, and any wood allergies you may have.

You will be sending and receiving the medium sized flat rate boxes from the USPS.  A few have asked to trade the larger boxes.  If you would like to send a large box, let me know that too.

Sorry, but because of governmental regulations and high costs of shipping outside of the US, we must restrict this event to those members who live in the boundaries of the USA.  Even for us who are in the US and participating, we need to be careful.  PLEASE!  Take the time to remove all bark possible.  There are many critters that love to live just under the bark.  Your removal of the bark will make great strides to reduce the trans-location of those pests to other parts of the country.

So, get your information in to me via PM ASAP.  Cut-off to sign up will be Friday night, 1/28, at 11:30 PM.  I will have the address for you to send your wood to in your inbox early Saturday morning.  You should be able to get your box into the Post Office by Wednesday, 2/2, at the latest.  By staying in country, I would suspect that all wood should arrive at its intended location no later than Saturday, 2/5.

I'm getting excited.  Hope you are too.  Let the fun begin!

By now you all should have received PM's alerting you to who you are to send your box of wood to.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask.  I know I made one mistake saying that one person was to send a medium sized box when they clearly said they would send a large box.  That correction was made.  However, it is entirely possible that other mistakes were made.

Get your boxes out in the 2-3 days.  As you begin to receive boxes in the mail, lets be sure to post in this thread who from and what you received.  I'll keep track and send reminders if someone falls behind.  I doubt that will happen though.

Looking forward to hearing what you get and then what you eventually do with the wood you get.  I love this stuff.  Hope you do too.  Have fun!

Finally got mail today and wouldn't you know, a big box of goodies from Harold Goodman!  Cheesy

Two pieces of mahogany suitable for pen blanks; I may have something else up my sleeve for these  Cool, an apple branch, some gorgeous figured flame box elder, a couple of pieces of figured maple, a decent sized chunk of redwood from a 100 year old wine vat, and a piece of Kentucky coffeewood that I finally had to take to the garage because Gonzo the cat wouldn't leave it alone!  smiley=thumbsup.gif

Awesome stuff, thanks Harold!!  smilies=bowdown

Came home from work today and tripped over a box of wood from JeffBR with a big chunk of Apple and some smaller pieces of Birdseye Maple.  Thank you Jeff.

Got a package today from Todd Harris. Got a nice walnut bowl blank, some mahogany, spalted maple and honey locust and english elm pen blanks, and a smaller walnut blank that is at the moment waiting for a few coats of finish on it's journey to becoming a ring bowl!

Thanks Todd!

Received my large box package today from new member Dennis Hammer.

Included was some olive wood pen blanks, a striped bottle stopper blank (might be kingwood or zebra wood), three mystery wood bowl blanks, and a piece of what might be cherry burl.

I'm looking forward to finding out more about this wood... assuming that Dennis knows more about it.

Fun stuff!

Received my box from Shannon out in Oregon on Friday.  I was having so much fun looking through it at all the unusual woods I forgot to put a note in here.  Some nice looking burl pieces along with several bottlestopper-type blanks and even the dowels and corks to make some.  Thanks Shannon!

You're welcome Jeff...enjoy.

I got mine today from Kathy...very nice thing on a very lousy day at work. A couple of 1/2 logs about 5" across of Acacia and 1 of mesquite, a eucalyptus spindle blank and some little pieces of dunno wood. Can't wait until the weekend!

Shannon, sorry forgot to put in the note. The little pieces are mesquite pen blanks (for 2 piece pens like slimlines) they are marked to show the orientation for which ends go together.

Got it...that would explain the rubber bands, numbering and funny marks Smiley I'll have to take a closer look at them this weekend.

My box arrived yesterday, but I didn't see it sitting on out front porch until this morning.

Thanks Don Hammond for the nice pecan bowl blank.

Got a box of wood from Ken.  A large black cherry blank a bunch of other various woods and some corian.  Can't wait for it to warm up a bit so I can get some more turning done.  28 degrees in the shop right now.

Mine arrived from Dale Gillaspy just last night. Lots of little bits to sort out how I want to use it.
