Looking for Calligraphy pen kit.
Feb 19th, 2011 at 2:35pm

After showing a beautiful pink ivory fountain pen a lady now wants a calligraphy pen. I have looked for a pen kit but no luck, a little surprised. I have a calligraphy nib but it would be hard to thread it in a adapted fountain pen kit but might be my only choice. If I can't do it right I won't do it. I can thread wood threads with a metal thread but not plastic like I have. It seems they have fallen out of favor. There are a few pens like the sheaffer pen which I have but no kits I can find.Any help will be appreciated.

Order a fountain pen kit with a replaceable nib and then order an extra wide nib for it.  FWIW, usually nibs cost as much as or more than the kits they fit.

I have a fountain pen nib, I think it is Iridium coated and maybe I can carefully sand off the tip to make it chisel shape. I seems odd that after 2 days searching I can't find a calligraphy kit, many people still seem interested. The problem with trying a chisel tip is thread mismatch.
I will keep looking but does not seem very promising. I might have to do as you suggest. The person is willing to the costs.

I have an extensive collection of dip calligraphy nibs.  It looks like you drill about a 1/4" hole in the turned pen end and then insert a 1/4"dowel with the front half sanded down so the nib would slide in.  Would have to be snug.  I think you could then replace the nibs like you would in a regular nib pen.  I will play with it a little and see if it will work.  I don't see why it wouldn't as that is basically what my nib dip pens are.  Would be fun to turn anyway.  Calligraphy nibs are essentially italic nibs so if you can find an italic nib to go in a fountain pen kit you would be in business.  I know of a place that will customize a nib for you.  nib $255 plus $55 to customize the nib.  To do this your customer had better be well heeled.

Check Craft Supplies  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

They show a #5 calligraphy nib for $9.99.  You'd have to buy one of their pen kits and appropriate bushings, but it's doable.    The pen kits range from 10:00 to 40:00, so make sure the lady wants to spend a hundred or better.

Thanks John! I had done a search there but come up empty. Trying the #5 calligraphy nib did the trick. Thats very doable. And I don't mind buying a kit and tools sine I will use them down the road anyway. Maybe I will make a few since I have been ask more than once about calligraphy pens.

Larry, I noticed my old plastic Sheaffer has an italic nib. I remember using fountain and calligraphy pens when I was younger but don't know much about them, I do know nibs can be expensive but I don't know what makes a nib good or bad. I like calligraphy pens and started making my business card with one, I am not so much into selling yet but people have ask for a card. For some reason I find myself slowing down and writing better than I thought I could when using a calligraphy pen. I would like to know more about dipping ink and dipping pens. The nibs you mentioned are a little to expensive for me but I am glad people are still making and using them. I will try a few nibs that John suggested on a fountain pen kit and add them to my collection. Could you suggest a ink for dipping and also a little about what makes a good nib? I think there is a craft store that sells them and ask my neighbor to check when she went there. She says they sell them so I might go take a look today. I enjoy going back in time a little and finding out about what people used before todays modern but often disposable items.

Speedball still makes and sells Calligraphy dip pens, nibs, and inks.  They used to make 100's of different nibs.  Varying by width, stiffness, and surface shape.

I am glad someone is still making them, there seems to be a market for them even if it might not be a big one. I would not be surprised if they are  popular in other in countries, like maybe Japan. That's why I find it surprising there is not a pen kit for Calligraphy as they might only have to change the nib. I will try the nibs John pointed me to on a fountain pen kit. They (Woodturners) say that size nib will fit several different pens. There artisan looks quite similar to the PSI fountain pen kit I am making now, it might even be the same pen kit.
I think I might like the calligraphy pen even a little better than just a plain fountain pen. You can right nicely without even trying to hard.

My wife is into calligraphy and all her pens are very simple shafts with a push fitting for the nibs.  The shafts are very inexpensive, the nibs can be horrendously expensive and come in about 556 variations for each type.

You asked about ink.  You can use ordinary black fountain pen ink but most calligraphers will tell you it's not black enough and then you get into big money because the specialised inks are as expensive as you wish to go.

From what my wife has told me, the two main features for a good calligraphy pen are shaft thickness and balance.  Weight is not an issue if the pen is properly balanced.

Thanks for all your help, I am lost when it comes to such things but like to learn. All though I like to turn other things I guess pens will be my main interest. I lack art skills but maybe can learn to make a good pen.
