My Shop
Apr 24th, 2011 at 5:53pm

Here are some pictures of my little shop.  I do a lot of flat work and the Jet Mini Lathe is a relatively new addition - which has essentially taken over my life.  Now I'm wondering where on earth I'm going to put that Powermatic! Shocked  Half of my shop doubles as a garage (I know...gasp..) for my wife's car so anything on that side needs to be mobile.  When the time comes I'm sure I'll find a spot.... Smiley

Nice use of space.  I am sure you will find room.  Must be cold there, heats on.

You'll have plenty of room for the MM when you get rid of all that useless flat work equipment.

Doug -

Really nice and efficient use of space.  Looks like you've spent enough time out there to really polish the layout to maximze functionality... now get rid of most of that stuff and turn it into a turners shop! (I should take my own advice, haven taken the same "turn of interest" - sorry couldn't resist).

Now that is an excellent well equipped and well thought out shop. Now you need to figure out how to take over the other 1/2. Wink

I got to see one of them things a couple of week back, them things are TINY!!! Funny thing though... the hubby and wifie who was using that little thing were taller than me and I'm 5'7" and they said it was comfortable to travel in! One main problem... no room to haul wood!!!

I've sat in one.  I'm 6' 0" and it was perfectly comfortable.  But I have no practical use for a 2-seat car with no cargo space at all.  It is one of the few things smaller than my shop.

They have a problem with Smart cars out here.  People try to drive them to Flagstaff (145 miles) and as they top a mesa from between walls of a cut about half way, they get blown over.  I have heard of 3 or 4 getting blown right off the roadway there.

My Wife has had a Smart for two years, and loves it.  The biggest danger of the car is others acting like jerks around it. Either they are amazed and spend more time looking at the car than paying attention to their own driving or they start getting macho and "not gonna let that little thing get ahead of ME!" I have never ridden in it when at least one person has not been pointing at it.

I had to drive it once when my truck was in the shop. I pulled into a parking space and the reflection startled me, I had gotten use to looking out, and from the inside the car looks a lot bigger than it is, and seeing just how small it really is in the refection was a jolt.

By the way I am 6'2" and it is one of the only cars where I do not have to have the seat all the way to the back stops on the runners.

Personally the only thing wrong with it from my perspective is the suspension, the wheel base is so short it gives a rough and choppy ride. I am not sure if I would want to go 145 miles in one no matter what the wind conditions are, I would imagine that the wind profile is not much worse than a mini van though and the big difference between a Smart and a Van is wheel base, the width is the same they are just shorter.

Oh yeah, it still doesn't fit in the garage.

I think they are a great around town car, but their light weight and relatively high profile makes them inappropriate for open highways that are prone to high winds.

I know my Jeep Wrangler is pretty light weight and gets blown around on the road a good bit.  Can't imagine a smart car and how much it would get blown around.  Would be a nice little run the errands car though.  At least as long as you didn't have to bring anything of size home.

Rev, you can fit 3 whole grocery bags in the front seat.  Without blocking the side window.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
