OK so some seem to think we need a fun challenge. I guess I'll throw down the gauntlet.

At my local club's meeting Dale Nish was the demonstrator and was showing his technique for what he called "reverse turning". The idea is that you turn a bulb on the bottom of a hollow form, part off the tenon in such a way that you can later use it to plug the bottom, hopefully matching any distinguishing marks so that most people can't tell what you've done. Then make a very small neck of some sort and bore the neck with a hole through the neck down to the hollowed bulb at the bottom.

His proportions were one third for the bottom, then the next two thirds for the neck and any bell that you might want to add.

I can't seem to find any pictures of what he demonstrated but I plan on doing something like this in the next few days. If anyone wants to join in, give it a go and post your pictures here. Key items to show is the over-all form an a close up of where the plug is. The key is to plug it off so that no one can tell its a plug.

It's pretty cool. I'll see if I can find it. It might be the time to try this one out!

Then the upper opening can be anywhere, it doesn't have to be in the center of the top. JimQuarles

I'm having a hard time finding a picture.

Here is a drawing of the profile.

Again the idea is that the bulb is about one third and the neck around two thirds so a normal tool won't be able to create the piece and the bulb is also well hollowed. Another key is to make the neck hole too small for a fellow turner to get their finger down. That way you can claim perfection in the rest of the hollowing. smiley=thumbsup.gif

I'll work on a PDF later if you guys like but here is a little teaser of what I'm talking about. In the first pic. you've turned tenons on both ends. Then we define the shape in the second. In the third, we part off the bottom(important tip, save the tenon). After hollowing the bottom, we glue the bottom back on as a plug.

Tomorrow, we turn it around and bore the hole through the neck and finish it all off.

I need an excuse to use my easy hollower anyway. After todays disaster I need to move on to something else. Bowl blew up and hit my face mask hard enought I had to replace the visor protector. Cheap compared to my nose.

That's exactly why you wear a face shield. Good to hear you only bruised your pride. I've been saved more than once by mine. Probably one of the most important tools I have. I don't take it for grated. I hated hard hats until I got hit in the head by a rock the size of a cantaloupe. Probably would have killed me. The hat got a big kiss.

This looks like a cool project. I can invision the whole thing, even the "how." But I've got this trip and no shop time. Unless I can sneak some in this evening and tomorrow morning. I'll be at dad's and working with "foreign" tools, but I just may be able to work it in. Hmmmm Roll Eyes

No worries. No rules other than the technique and I wasn't thinking of any time limit except lack of interest. If you don't get to it before the trip, you can always catch it later.

I think we let people who post a project do the judging if at all.
