I did a couple of these, and I finally got one that I think turned out really well.  I had other ones with better matches on the bottom plug, but the figure in this, along with the form makes it my best.

It's a little under 3" high, so it's pretty small.

The wood is spalted ambrosia maple from turningblanks.net.  The figure is outstanding!  I can't wait to turn more of this stuff.

Carrie,

That is one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever seen.

Very nice Carrie. I made two more today from some spalted white birch. I'll post pictures when they are finished. I'm just having way too much fun seeing how far I can push things.

OK so here's one of the spalted, white birch pieces and the corresponding bottom. I forgot to mark where they should line up. The spalting lines helped me figure it all out.

Here's the other one. Both of the birch pieces stand nine inches tall and about four inches wide. Finished with lacquer.

Now this one is a true work of art.  Very well done and the match on the bottom looks pretty good.  I've still got a couple more projects to work on before I can get back to these, but after that first one, I want to do more for sure.  I'm even thinking of one for a very special project.  It needs to be a piece of beauty and this style of work might just fill the bill.  Still working that one out.  Anyway, this is a very nice piece.
