A NEW Challenge & Trade
Jul 2nd, 2011 at 1:17am

A NEW Challenge & Trade!† Weíve done bowls, goblets, ornaments, wall hangings, pens, candlesticks, tops, boxes, cube, square round, twisted, enhanced, inside/out, and even game calls.

For those of you who are new to our C&T's,† You have been Challenged to create a piece to the best of your abilities that meet the specifications given, & once completed, you will Trade it to another participant either in a Round Robin, where A sends to B, B sends to C, C sends to D...† or you have a Partner to send your piece, and your partner will send you their piece.† Trade assignments are given after pieces are completed and all photos posted.† If you havenít posted a picture of your completed piece by the picture deadline, you will not be eligible for a trade.

This C&T will be a Round Robin style trade.† Everyone who participates will be assigned another member to receive their bowl.† Sign up here if you are interested in giving it a try.† Everyone needs to post here when they ship, and again when they receive their trade.† Your mailing address must also be sent to me by PM by the picture deadline!† Also, when you sign up, indicate if you are willing to ship overseas if we have participants across the pond.† Or if we have enough participants there, we can run a separate group there.

The new challenge is to make an elongated natural edge bowl from a small log or branch.† Call it angel wing, or winged bowl, or banana bowl, or tray, or .... whatever.† Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register will give you an idea of what we are talking about.† These are turned from a skinny half or whole log in side grain orientation.

WARNING!
Keep your fingers behind the tool rest.† You will be mostly cutting air.† Advance tools very slowly or you will experience IFOís. (Identified Flying Objects)

OK!† Now who is going to sign up to try this?† †Are you in?† It doesnít matter if you are a seasoned turner or a relative newbie.† All we ask is that you make a serious effort to do your best.† We know it is summer, so we are giving you plenty of time to do it.

The C&T gallery will open late on Friday, August 5 and your picture must be posted by midnight EDT Sunday, August 7.† Participants will be assigned a trade using random.org, and the assignments will be posted Monday, August 8.† All packages must be postmarked by Saturday August 13.†

Good Luck!

Oh man, really??!!??   Sad  I was looking forward to this when I found out what C&T meant, but I'm pretty sure this is beyond my capability at this point.  We'll see, I guess that's the "challenge" part of C&T, right?

You got it Erika.† Give it a try, but remember the warnings.† Once you have it mostly balanced, they actually turn better at higher speeds.† There is less "air" time.† It just seems more solid.

If you don't try, you won't succeed.

Yes.  The only problem is having people willing to pay the extra postage for Canadian or overseas postage.  Go ahead and try, and we will work on having it covered.

DUDE!  I just re-read the parameters.  I've turned two pieces already and I don't think that either fits.  Maybe the first one.  I'll have to chew on it a while.  However, I'm on a role turning the past few days.  I may knock it out tomorrow.  LOML and son are going to TN Monday for the week.  I should be able to spend a good bit of evening time in the shop next week as well.  Who knows what I might get turned.

Parameters, hmmm....  Elongated...  Natural edge...  Half or full log...  Side grain...  Bowl or tray...

What doesn't fit?  Is it too specific?  Remember, that was just one example.  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register would be another.

I know.  Either would have been accepted.  But they just don't fit.  One was a wing bowl like Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.  The second one was more of a closed form bowl, think calabash.  Like I said, I'm on a turning role right now.  Just an excuse to get back in the shop and TURN.

Well, I've tried. I really did. But my little lathe doesn't seem to have the horsepower for something like this. It keeps stopping, and I'm afraid of burning out the motor.  Sad Hopefully next time I can participate.

Use a smaller log.  I only have a mini lathe and I have tried these several times.  They always ended up in pieces, but that was beside the point.   Shocked Shocked

Ed, that is why we call it a challenge.  So many of the earlier challenges have gotten people to try new forms and they have found that they were easier than they thought, and made more.  Look at how many have tried the reverse hollowing Robert suggested.

We would welcome another participant.  Who knows, you may end up doing big propellers.

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register† I'm not ready to enter yet but here's my first attempt at this type of turning done this morning. Made from a crab apple trunk I cut 17 mths ago, I was doing well till just a final smooth pass on the inside and snaged a tip of a wing and out she came and flying† Angry. Torn bad but the waste block held and I'll practice a finish on the apple for experience. I'll be at it again in a few days.

The third time was the charm for me.† Not sure what my issue was the first 2 times.† The third time though, it all clicked for me.† Got it done yesterday.† Waiting for the finish to dry so that I can buff it out.† I've had a couple of folks see it already and say something like, "What's that?"† I simply have no way to tell them other than call it a "dust catcher."† Even LOML said something about it being different and that she kind of likes it.† Pretty high praise from her.† Anyway, it is done (basically) and will go in the box in a couple of days.† Just waiting on an addy from the chief challenge maker.† WooHoo!† Now I can sit back and watch the rest of you squirm as you try to finish yours.† This really is a fun project that does challenge your tool usage and nerve.† Don't feel like you have to work down to starting your sanding at 220 or something.† I started sanding at 60 grit, mostly done off the lathe.† One thing I re-learned with this piece:† I HATE SANDING!

BTW, Erika, if your mini lathe is like mine, you may well be right. It might not have the power to do it. (Mine is 1/5 hp and variable speed, which means it has about as much torque as a wet Kleenex.) Maybe we could arrange for you to try one on my Big Girl lathe.  Wink

I'm in. I've done a few of these over the last year. For those who are just starting out, some tips I've learned.

Hard rule #1, nothing. except the tool, goes past the tool rest. This keeps those valuable digits and other body parts where they belong.

Use very light cuts with very sharp tools. I prefer using my spindle gouge or a good bowl gouge. I think if it as a shaving lesson. Since you are cutting lots of air, hold the tool very steady and don't plunge it into the wood like when you make a bowl. Just hold the tool steady and see how light you can cut. This also reduces tear out. Sanding these things is more painful than almost any other piece.

Start at the outside and work your way in. Once you have the outer edge done, move on. You can't really go back and clean things up later. The wood will change shape and there will be less there to support it. This will really teach tool control.

Take your time and work slowly.

To add to Robert's excellent tips, I like to turn things like this in the dark.† Shocked

I find it's easier to see the "ghost" image of the wood when the shop lights are turned off and I'm only using a single 100w task light at the lathe. It's not really dark, but it's kind of strange turning in a darkened shop. It really helps me see what I'm cutting, though.

I agree with Robert's idea to cut lightly.  But, wouldn't you guys who have done a lot more of these than I have agree that lathe speed is your friend?  My experience and what I remember from those who have specialized in this kind of turning is that the faster the wood is spinning, the easier it is to stay on the wood and not drop down between the wings.  Sounds crazy as that prop gets to whirring, but it really does make the turning much smoother.

Oooh, I love a challenge.  I'm in!  I just picked up some random logs a week or two ago, so hopefully one of them will work for this!

Rev. Doug Miller wrote on Jul 11th, 2011 at 8:52am:
But, wouldn't you guys who have done a lot more of these than I have agree that lathe speed is your friend?†

Yes. I think I read some place that at about 1700 rpm that the wood basically becomes solid.
When shaping the outside which you do first,† you don't need to worry too much about going over some previous cuts.
On the inside I usually hollow down to about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch thickness and then go back for my final cuts.
This is the area when you get thin that you have to be very careful about completing every step.
You want to make sure you establish the correct thickness for the entire piece as you go down and once you move past that point don't go back.

I hope we see some really interesting new shapes.

After reading my post I realized I have to add that those thicknesses mentioned above are for a piece about 8 inches in diameter not for a larger piece.

Rev. you're right. Increasing the speed helps but it also flexes the wood more. This puts a premium on working from the outside to the inside and make sure that you don't have to go back because as you remove material from the outside, there is less support and more flex. If you end up with a tool mark, you're better off sanding it out than trying to clean it up at the end like you would with a normal bowl.

I usually spin these as fast as I can and keep the vibration low. If you want to sand on the lathe, go to HF and pick up some of those large hemostats for cheep. Clamp the sand paper in the jaws and use that to sand. DO NOT leave your fingers in the rings. Hold them by the shaft with the rings in your hand. That way if you get a catch with the tool, you can let go.

I'd really like to try this but I've been having difficulty finding shop time lately.  Not going to commit, but if I can find some shop time, I'll try to make one.

As a rule of thumb, when making these type of Natural Edge pieces;

For Bowls using an entire log or branch section, i.e. not half a log;
  • If your diameter of the piece is the width of the log, the edge will dip halfway into the bowl.
  • Increasing the diameter means a larger dip into the bowl and more flexing.

For a flatter bottom and more of a canoe shape;
  • Diameter should be 1 1/2 to 2 or 3 times width of log.
I experimented with a few of these types during our turning get together here. Rolling the lip in, makes an interesting shape...

I agree that speed is your friend on these, with the caveat that the higher the speed, the more chance for a catastrophic failure. I had a tenon break on one this evening at about 1200 rpm (pretty soft wood, and I probably got a little too aggressive with the cut...I was cutting near the center). At that speed, things can fly fast and far. I was out of the line of fire, so no blood no foul. I did have to go to the other side of the shop to pick up the remains, though.

And it goes without saying...always wear full face protection.  Wink

Vaughn,

+1 on that. Evidently there was a crack or fault in the limb I was trying to turn, I cleared off almost to it from the bottom and then changed over with a expansion hold from the chuck.
Worked my way down to an almost finished thickness and all of a sudden Pow pieces all over the shop. It came apart in 4 pieces and with 2K revs they spread fast, I was working from the tail stock end and only caught a ricochet from the ceiling.

I have two more possible branched to check out.

I have a couple branches that are between 2 and 3" diameter.  Am I understanding correctly that I'll want to start with a piece approximately 6" long?

Rev, It looks like we have about 17 talking about trying this so far.  We still have almost 4 weeks left, so we may get more.

I know there are some of you out there who won't say anything until they have a successful attempt, and others who will try it quietly and not even say anything if they are successful.  That is fine.  But if you have questions, ask them even if you haven't said you are in for the trade.  The main goal of our C&T is to stretch your abilities.

This is fun.  Here's my first try at the shape.  It's about 1.5" wide and 4" long.  So far, my biggest lesson learned is to used as fast a speed as I can, and to take really light cuts on the hollowing so I don't chip the edge and to hopefully keep things smooth and even.  We'll see how the next one goes later!

I had a go at three of them on Saturday. I think I said something about once you get part of it to finish thickness, don't go back. It seems I forgot that part. The first two, I was feeling lucky and did just that, IFO's a plenty. I did manage to salvage them but they aren't what they were intended to be. The third turned out kind of interesting with the tips of the wings turning back toward the center. I'll get pics. up later.

Worse comes to worse, I have some from a while back that need finish sanding. The aren't as wild but they'll work.

OK I actually did manage a little bit of shop time this weekend and managed to give this a try, well two actually.

First time was a very green maple half log.† Tree was taken out by a storm a week ago yesterday...† Felt like I was taking a shower while turning!† Went at it 1st with my 1/2" V Bowl gouge and was having trouble going light enough to not get catches so I switched to my Ci0.† Went better after that, but I was still getting really bad tearout on the trailing edge of each end of the log;† back edges of the log were peeling up rather than cutting.† Only had that problem on the outside, once I got the outside reasonably shaped, and started hollowing that was no longer such and issue.† Lost the bark on it and it's a little rough, but fairly happy for a 1st try.

Decided to give it another shot so I went and pulled a roughly 3" branch off my firewood pile.† Turned out to be locustcrete† Shocked† I ran out of shop time before I got very far with that one, but I was having the same problem with the trailing edges on it.† Hoping to get back to it at some point soon...

I don't have anything worth sharing yet, but now that I've tried, I'm determined to do one of these successfully...

Well, I was trying whole log. Why stop with just half. About nine inches long and about four inches wide. Finished with Danish Oil. I'll probably top coat it with spar varnish after the oil cures.

Leo, I think you could use that for a rim embellishment on something else. Just turn a cup or something and glue that on for a rim.

You could also put it on top of your head, us a bandanna or some cloth to tie it on and claim it is either a Chinese thing or Chuck's special turning cap. It wards off the funnel bunnies.

Some great ideas Robert, I just may do the hat thing.............oh, on second thoughts, it wouldn't be as good as Chucks hat, which we all had to see again, far too recently...... Cheesy

Try, try and try again, I just get too excited near to the finishing ( story of my life  Kiss ) and forget the thinny bit at the bottom. smiley=slap.gif

If you play golf, you've heard of the "Yips."  I've had them in turning too.  Get right at the end, starting to get excited about it and YIP, like a something hit a nerve and causes me to jerk or shove or something else and my gouge takes on a mind of its own.  Next thing I know I have a hole, or worse, a thin spot that will look like a goof no matter what I do to it.  No matter, you'll get it with the next one, or maybe the one after that, or well, maybe never.  But you'll sure have a good time trying.

Got mine completed... whew.  This one will be one-of-a-kind, especially since I don't plan to do this again.  Unless the money is right, of course.  Mixed emotions about this style of turning, but for the most part I didn't enjoy this challenge.  smiley=shake head.gif Too much hand sanding.  Angry
But I completed it and will have a pic soon.

I had surgery a couple weeks ago. Had to have a hysterectomy, bunch of tumors (benign) resulting in a mass the size of a cantalope. Got the ok from the Dr to resume normal activities yesterday, so I'll be giving the chainsaw a workout this weekend.

Just finished painting 6 offices and a board room at our new building so I might actually have some time in the shop... I'm not too much of a fan of the "flat" version of these.

Would something like this (not my work) still fit the bill?

I'm out of logs for this.  I have two successful ones that are 1.5" x 4", but they're so tiny I don't think they really qualify for the trade.  My last larger one broke off at the tenon this evening and cracked when it hit the ground.  This has been true to the label of challenge though!

Carrie, for me, size doesn't matter. I've only gotten a couple items from fellow turners and I love them all. Some are small, one is large. I'd say add your successful one to the trade, unless you can't part with it. It will be better to have yours added to the mix than not at all.

Yes these are a challenge. They are great projects when you feel you're getting stale and need something to test your nerves. When you get one off the lathe, the tend to be one of the first pieces people pick up to admire and wonder how you were able to do that.

Yes.  It has been there since early this afternoon.

Go to the Gallery and post your pictures for this in the "2011 Summer Challenge" area if you want to trade.  They must be posted by midnight Sunday EDT.  Also I must have received a PM with your mailing address by then.  Let's see some pictures now.

Got a picture of my attempt posted. Comments welcome for sure.

It must be me, but I can't seem to get my picture larger or I get that the file is too large to upload. It has got to be me, I can also not seem to get 2 pictures in one album.

do you mean 2 pictures together(similar to Bob Hamilton) viewing as one or 2 separate pictures?  if 2 together, you have to use a photo editor so stitch them together first and then upload the single picture.  if 2 separate pictures, you have to upload each separately.

I see 7 pictures posted in the 2011 Summer Challenge Gallery.† I have received all 7 mailing addresses.† Folks, you have about a day left to post your picture and PM me with your mailing address.† We had more than 7 that said they were going to do this.† I've blown up 5 so far, and I am going to do another one tomorrow.† I had a lesson with Tom Tunget today, and we did one together, right after I showed him how to turn a pen.

I just posted mine, hope you like it.
This was my second attempt at this type of thing. I still have the first one sitting on the decorative firewood pile. The first one was full log style and had a small check in one end. I tossed it thinking the check would open up and ruin it.
Now, a month later, the check has not moved. I might have to go back and give it another try.
Jim, let me know if you need my info again, and I'll ship anywhere.

Managed to salvage the piece I was working on... Not quite as rounded as I wanted but I think it's pretty good for my first natural edge bowl.

A little bit of tool marks on the inside - still learning decent control and the whirring of the wings had me a tad wary of introducing my fingers to a bowl edge.  Shocked

Well, I tried with 1/2 of an African Sumac log, and ended up with the piece at the bottom of the first pic missing the small chunk out of the edge.  Then I tried the other 1/2 of the AS log, and it ended up all over the shop.  Then I tried with a whole Mesquite log and it was so off balance that it didn't want stay in the chuck.  Another Mesquite log, and I got the other one in the first pic with a big chunk missing.  So I tried a 1/2 log of Sweet Acacia, and the result is in the second picture.  Five tries and zip.

Yesterday I went over to Tom Tunget's to show him how to turn pens, and then he showed me how to do a winged bowl, and I tried again today.  It isn't as thin as my other tries, but it survived!

We now have 12!

I guess my post didn't go through on Friday. Well I have a picture but I don't have a product anymore. I cancelled my entry (at least I thought I did) using this handheld. I guess I should have used my PC.†

Well, I had it in my shop drying and everything was fine. Until I went in Friday morning to apply another oil coat before going to work. As soon as I opened the shop door, I heard a terrible noise. Apparently there was a bowl blank that didn't want to be there anymore and decided to roll and landed on top of my wing bowl breaking it into 3 pieces.†

Well, to make a long story short, I don't have a bowl to enter and don't see myself as having time or patience to do another one anytime soon. That thing took me 3 days to get right. All my turning from now until October is dedicated for show inventory. I hope y'all understand. Believe me, I'm still upset.†

Well here it is, moday morning, so I guess all the entries are in. Thats it, 12 entries, where is everybody? Since WR just past the 3500 member mark I think we can do better than about a third of a percent.
I do want to thank those who joined in and hope whoever recieves my turning enjoys it. Also, sorry to those who had mishaps and did not get an entry in.
I am looking forward to the next C&T and hopefully more participants. Thanks Jim

OK,  We have the list of participants, and it has been run through Random.org several times to scramble it.  I will get PM's with addresses out to everyone shortly.  Each member on the list will be sending to the member listed below them.

Tom Tunget
Dirk Hoogendoorn
Robert Harper
David Hamann
Bob Hamilton
Rafael Gomez
Jim Quarles
Leo Makepeace
Edward Weber
Kathy Marshall
Doug Miller
Carrie Bradfield
Tom Tunget

Thanks for participating in this C&T.  I think this one may have been a little harder than some we have had in the past, but we had some that thought it would be too hard that tried and succeeded.

PM's sent.  Please double check against the list to make sure I sent you the correct person's address.  Remember to get your packages in the mail before the PO closes on Saturday.

For those of you who are shipping across borders, be sure to label for customs that it is a handmade gift with NO cash value.  And check with the PO if a form 2976 needs to be attached.

You mean your Post Office works Saturday? (Chuck up here just till Friday aft.)

Jim, I will be mailing mine this aft. Then my wife is taking me camping for 3 weeks, so whoever has my name they do not need to hurry since I will not be picking it up till the end of August.

Even though the trade is over (or at least in progress), I'm not quite done with the challenge part.  Someone in my AAW chapter brought a bunch of branches, free for the taking this week, so I picked up several more to do some more oblong natural edge shapes/bowls.  Yay!

Good on ya Carrie! I'm still at the sponge stage where I try almost everything I see. Some things I don't do so well at but I keep them in the back of my mind to try again when I feel better about my skill level. I even keep some of the not so good ones to remind me of projects I'd like to perfect.

With all the different styles, I can't see how anyone can get bored turning.

Keep up the good work. It is always fun to see what you make.

Jim, yours is in the mail! Somehow "Air Mail" to the US still takes 9-10 days, which is odd since I can drive to the border in about an hour or so...

I guess they must use a bunch of string and handful of swallows to send packages by air.

Just got home from running errands and found a box on the porch!
It was from Edward Weber, extremely well packed and contained a beautiful NE bowl. His gallery picture looks great, but this is even better in person!

Thanks Edward! Great job!

Kathy, maybe it wasn't you.  No matter, it is beautiful and looks great in my rogue's gallery.  I'm lovin' it and am excited to add a Kathy Marshall to my collection.

Carrie, just want to let you know that a box is in the hands of the postal service and heading your way.  It should be in your hands, but was delayed on my end.  I suspect you should have it tomorrow or Thursday.  I hope it makes it in one piece.

Excellent! That's faster than I expected!

I think that's my first "official" bowl ever... other than some green practice pieces from a few courses.

Great to hear mine got to you OK David. It was fun to do. Now we're even. I have your ornament and you have my winged bowl, well sort of a bowl. It won't hold much but it is very unique. Tell your wife I'm glad she likes it.

My bad. How could I possibly missed that one?

I'm very sorry Ed. It is your ornament and not David's that I have proudly displayed on my mantle.

I guess I'll have to claim oldtimer's.

I'd sign them on the underside. I gave out some scoops once and the people who recieved them wanted to know why there wasn't a signature on them. I told them that was because there wasn't a place to hide the signature and I was told that was what makes them special. So I don't worry about hiding the signature on them anymore and just sign the handles or sides close to the bottoms. Now when I give family and friends pieces, they first turn it over to see when it was made and if I identified the wood.

I think, for instance the one you sent me, in a circle around the bottom finial would be perfect. Think of it like Picasso not signing a painting. Without the signature, it is just a goofy picture of a bull. With the signature, its a Picasso!

I just got mine from Dirk Hoogendoorn today. I love the walnut. The house I had before this one had two black walnut trees that were almost dead in the back yard. Oh how I wish I'd saved some of that when I moved but I wasn't turning then. Sad

Dirk,
I sent yours out today.
Hopefully it will arrive just as you get back from your camping trip.

Been itching to send it, didn't feel right keeping it here so long!

Thank you Tom, UPS just delivered it this morning. Lovely piece, It will certainly have a place on my allotted "display shelf". Great finish on it, very nice job. What did you use and what kind of wood is it? smiley=thumbsup.gif

It looks like this was the last to be delivered, but I've lost track, so is there anyone out there who did NOT get their trade piece?
