Another garage pretending to be a shop
Aug 7th, 2011 at 5:46am

Here's my "work in progress". For many years I shared a garage/workshop with a friend out east of town... but his interests have changed and as I got older I felt more and more the need to have some climate control (which was not possible in the old shop). This is the result, so far.

The first photo shows my wood storage and, up top on the wall is the inside part of a "mini-split" heat pump that gives me both heating and AC. (Works fantastic, and I love it!). The second photo just shows that I still have to leave room for a vehicle. The next two are really the "shop". My bandsaw is hidden behind the miter saw. Behind the woodworking bench I built a cabinet/counter that holds a tabletop drill press and my small lathe (Grizzly). Eventually the counter will have drawers on the left and doors on the right. Underneath the middle section is home for my router table. So far, it and the bandsaw are mobile... but eventually both the miter and scroll saws will get mobile bases. The last photo shows my ShopSmith and dust collector (SS accessories stored on the wall, underneath, and behind...... wherever I could find a bit of space). At the rate I'm going it may still be a year or two (maybe more) before I think I can call it a finished product, if ever.

Looks like it will be a fine shop.  Once momma gets the idea and starts to leave her car outside then you'll be able to have your shop to yourself.  That mat take a while though.  Your AC/heat unit is a neat unit.  They installed one of those in a FL garage on Ask This Old House.  Looks like a unit that I'd be interested in.  I'd have to do some insulation and wall finishing first though.

NOW MAKE SOME SHAVINGS AND DUST!

Rev. Doug, ---Momma lost her fight to big "C" several years ago... she's probably up there telling your boss how to do things now. Sad   That empty space is my pony stall (3rd or 4th childhood --Mustang convert. Can't leave it out as neighborhood cats love to climb and scratch up the paint, then the birds use everything for target practice!)

Jim Q., ---Yes sir! That's a definite must do. Thank goodness it's very easy, and the Jet air filter unit seems to help a bit on that account as well.

David H., --- 1+ on more light. Painting the walls white has helped, and I picked up several 4' flourescent fixtures  a while back... now just looking for my "round tuit".

As for the shop being too clean, I agree! (You didn't see a close-up of the lathe area... and I played at practicing for a while yesterday, so it's already looking more normal.)

Thanks for the good comments and suggestions, folks! I'm getting so many good ideas from the pictures of other shops that I want to try that I may never really "finish" mine........ but you can bet I will be having fun.

Sorry to hear about your loss.  But the shop area does look good.  I don't know, the pony needs its own home somehow, as does the shop.  Add on to the front of the garage maybe?  Keep at it.  You'll get there someday.

Nice space, sorry for your loss. My neighbor had split his garage.. you open the overhead door and thats the part where he parked his trike.. then you walk through a little , regular sized door and into the shop it was small but big enough to hold a bunch of tools, good sized work bench and wood storage.

Guys,
Thanks for all the condolences. It's been a few years now and as they say, "time heals all wounds" (well, mostly I guess)...

Chuck, your generosity overwhelms me...  Grin   I sure hope you didn't make that especially for me!

And Len... I would almost trade it to live in your neighborhood. Been thru there a couple of times on the big boats, and hopefully will again someday.

Nice shop, amazing how functional a garage can be. My wife jokes if I had a Murphy bed in my shop I would never come into the house.
