Out of this world
08/24/11 at 09:02:15

My first little video upload here.

Lauren and I joined the NJ Woodturners club a couple of months ago, in addition to the Hudson Valley Woodturners where we've been members for a couple of years.

At the NJ Wooturners, this month's program was a show and tell, with a club challenge.

The challenge was titled Out of This World and the challenge is to create a work of art, which employs wood turning, to conjure up images of outer space (real or not) ie. planets, solar systems, space vehicles… As new members, this was the first time most of the club got to see any of our work.

Lauren made an unusual necklace that has a buckeye burl pendant, and wire work of Argentium spirals and fitted with a few hematite stones. I'll post a photo of that soon.

I did make a couple of very quick photos of my challenge piece.

My submission is this 1.25" planet made of stabilized buckeye burl with articulated rings of bookmatched stabilized cherry burl. The largest ring is 3" in diameter. An interesting project... my first turned sphere. The pins that allow the rings to be positioned are .024" thick, so that involved boring some pretty tiny holes.

The planet balances atop a 1/8" x 12" black rod with a tiny turned cup at the top.

I hope some folk find the process useful/entertaining

Wow!  I really like that!  And the slilde show proved it wasn't magic, just inspiration, care, and good tools.  Don't forget to post a photo in the gallery.

Very clever and well thought out.  Just, please be careful with wrapping things around your finger, like dental floss.  Was the lathe spinning at the time? Shocked

Leo,

No, the lathe was not spinning at the time.  It took a few minutes of gentle prying/sawing with the dental floss to separate the tape from the mounting block.

Then it was easy to peel the tape from the back of the rings.

After I made the video it occured to me that someone might think the lathe was spinning, but I didn't think of it until the video was published.

I'll make a note on the YouTube page about it, but I don't know how many folk visit the host page.

But you're right... having the lathe spinning and wrapping something around your hands could be catestrophic.  That's why the wires I use for wood burning bands in spindles have little handles.

Leo,  I just added an annotation to the dental floss section of the video, making it clear that lathe was not spinning.  Thanks again for the heads up.
