The Man Cave
Aug 31st, 2011 at 9:57pm

Hey all, first time posting pics here on the site, so I hope this works. The Cave is a 10x12 converted garden shed. It's insulated and boarded and have yet to say it's too cold in winter. I have not seen the temp inside below-17C and a 4000w construction heater takes care of that pretty quick. Summertime hits about 85F, just right for shorts.

All of the wood you see in the pictures has been given to me by my dad. He has been a woodworker all of his life, a highly skilled craftsman, starting his apprenticeship in Germany at the age of 15. At 77yrs. he has yet to fully retire. Any left overs of his jobs usually end up in my hands, so I have a real good mix of oak, hard maple, birds eye maple, mahogany, cherry, bamboo, walnut, birch and some hickory. The soon to be bowls in log form are maple and birch burl.

Very nice, seems like you got it pretty well laid out, looks good to me too. Your 4000w construction heater, is it kerosene or something else, reason I ask if its kerosene you might want to consider a vent or window, the fumes can be dangerous ya know.

Mike, the heater is electric, I don't have to run it much longer that 1/2 hr. then I switch over to a smaller electric heater.

James. Do you find the lack of windows a problem or have you thought about adding one or two?

Len, I have thought about adding a window, but most of my turning is done in the evening(night) anyways, I have 3 more 4' fluorescent fixtures in the garage that i will probably add at some point, the eyes aren't as strong as they used to be  !!!    Funny you should mention IFO's...... was turning a piece of crab apple last night and wasn't watching how deep a crack had gone and bang, the bandsaw behind me  took the brunt of that one...said nighty night after that.  I will say though, that my new Ci1 makes short work of roughing out bowls really like it !!!
