New Companion Video: Coring Backwards
09/27/11 at 02:21:53

Hi:
I have uploaded a new video series to Youtube.  It is a companion video for my article "Coring Backwards".  It is a pretty long one, with a run time of over 90 minutes for all six segments.  The playlist is available at:  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Nice set of videos.

When I saw you start to core the center ring, I wondered how long it would take for the "A-HA!" moment to arrive.

Fortunately it came soon enough.

Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.

Hello Bob,
Thanks for a great video series!
I notice in some of the shots it looks like you are using the long grind bowl gouge with the flute pointing somewhat toward the bowl.  I think you were holding the gouge like this when you rough turned the bowl after all 3 rings were glued together.  I'm pretty new to turning and am not familiar with that technique.  Looks like it works very well.  Would it be similar to using the wings of the bowl gouge for shear scraping?  I think the handle position would be higher than shear scraping.

Thanks again for the videos.

Best,
Tom Goodman

Hi, Tom:
I believe I was performing a shear cut with the wing of the gouge at that time.  I have made a few single segment videos on various cuts with the long grind gouge:

The best video I have seen for showing the details of these cuts is Bill Grumbine's "Turned Bowls Made Easy".  It is basically where I learned how to do it.

Take care
Bob

Nice set of videos Bob.
I was thinking that your glue line ridge problem was due to the glue joint not shrinking as the wood does. Was that blank fairly dry to begin with?
Maybe some of our segmenters can offer some ideas, but you've already deveoped a sysytem!
I would like to hear other ideas too.
