OK gang, since we have seen that the group's skills have significantly improved with all the challenges, I'm going to put you brave souls that believe you are up to a real challenge to the test. We have a lot of new members, so we are going reuse a C&T from 5 years ago. This one is a bit more specific than some we have done, but if you use your imagination, there is room for creativity. Here goes:
Turn a goblet, meaning: bowl, stem and base, out of
1 piece of wood. It must be able to stand on it's own. Minimum of 6" tall, 4" of which must be stem, the bowl should be no less than 1 1/4" diameter. The stem should be no thicker than 3/16".
Ok, seem easy enough? Well, for those of you who are turner enough and want to go for extra credit, here are some suggestions:
longer stem (stem length of 6" or more)
thiner stem (1/8" dia. or less)
(add them together for double extra credit)
captive ring(s) on the stem
carved stem
carved bowl
eccentric stem
square edge in the bowl section
natural edge on the bowl or base
Use your imagination!
For those of you that want to try and join the challenge but have never turned a goblet, here's a great tutorial by Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!! You need to

For those of you who are new to our
C&T's, It is a
Challenge to create a piece to the best of your abilities that meet the specifications given,
& once completed, you will
Trade it to another participant either in a
Round Robin, where A sends to B, B sends to C, C sends to D... or you have a
Partner to send your piece, and your partner will send you their piece. Trade assignments are given after pieces are completed and
all photos posted. If you haven’t posted a picture of your completed piece by the deadline, you will not be eligible for a trade.
Time line will be 5 weeks to give people time to learn and practice if need be. The gallery will open Thursday, November 10, and pictures need to be posted by the end of the day, Sunday, Nov 13. You will also need to PM your mailing address to me by then as well. I will use Random.org to select the trades on Monday, Nov 14.
No Photo, No Address, No Trade. This trade will be a
Round Robin. OK! Now who is going to sign up to try this? Are you in? It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned turner or a relative newbie. All we ask is that you make a serious effort to do your best. If you are in, indicate whether you are willing to spend the little extra to ship outside the country.
