I might have to go for #2!

John, that is the fun part of these challenges. They get you to try things you haven't done before. Many times I hear, "I can't do that. It is beyond my skills." My answer is that you never know until you try. You may just succeed. If you never try, you will never succeed. I never did a goblet until someone dared me.

So for all those who are still thinking about this, "I dare you."

I'll try to dig up my round tuit, it's buried somewhere out in the shop. I'll also have to clean up the lathe a bit, sharpen a tool or two and PARCTICE.

Well, I started on mine today. Thought I'd challenge myself a bit with a really thin stem @ 1/8". Everything was fine until I went to adjust the jamb chuck on the live center, supporting the bowl section. Decided to leave it off and see how true it was running, thought I had the speed down low, turned the lathe on, it cranks up to 1500+ rpms and the cup became an IFO!
Guess I'll try again tomorrow, for now I'm going back out and turn me a nice, easy bowl!

Kathy, you have to support the turning at the tailstock end. When the stem part gets "thin" then you have to support it either w/a spindle steady or your fingers. If you use your fingers you'll learn very rapidly how to control the gouge w/one hand. It appears that lesson #1 has been learned.

The tailstock end of the turning can be supported by a wood disk covered w/some of that no slip rubber stuff one buys @ the dollar store. I can tell you how to make the disk and mount it if you PM me here.

I'm sure others here can give you other ideas as well.

Don't feel too bad Kathy. I did something like that earlier this year. I was going for one of those foot long stems on a sycamore branch. I had it half done and when I moved he tool rest, I put it right where it would catch the bell of the natural edge. Turned the lathe on and snap!

When I do my goblets, I put a piece of foam in the cup and bring the tail stock up to hold it in place. You don't want much pressure on it, just enough to stop the wobble. By using foam, when I part it off with the parting tool, the bottom of the foot stays resting on the tool so and the foam lets it move from the spinning tenon and I can turn the lathe off without having to catch the piece.

I think the broken stem club is a goblet maker's version of the funnel club for bowl turners.
