photo tent photos

Built a photo tent this weekend and I'm trying to figure out the lighting. In the thread before this one you guys were talking about shining the light at white paper and reflecting it back at the tent. Is this for reflection? I've taken about 50 pictures and I've had around 5 that I like. Reflection is my worst problem. I moved the lights about 3' away and it helped but then there wasn't really enough light. Help here's a few pictures. untouched. these don't look to god awful but I need help.

In the top photo I like the one on the left it shows the color although the background is a bit dark. I do like the pen on the right better more light so we see more details.

I agree with Dave. The first bowl photo has too harsh of shadows. (Did you use the flash for that one?) The second bowl shot could be a little lighter, but I think it came out pretty good. The second pen pic looks real good from where I'm sitting, too.

Don't worry too much about eliminating the reflection. Sometimes a little is a good thing, as it helps show the gloss of the finish and it can also help provide depth to the shot.

thanks guys. I have been playing with the settings on the camera but you comments are a good start for me to compare to. When I think I have it I will post a few more. That could be awhile.  Undecided

I really like the background on the photo_tent_002.jpg and the photo_tent_009.jpg the best, it brings out the true color of the piece's if you ask me.

Bill, I like the #2 and #9 the best.  I built a "photo box" using white foamboard.  Tried several lighting combinations with no luck.  Found what worked best for me was adjusting the white balance on my camera and just using the flourescent lighting in my shop.

Try lighting the background and theq piece separately. Putting a strong light on the background and using a diffused light source on the piece itself it may help you. Also, google "product photography tips" as that is what you are trying to get down.
