Third Annual Secret Santa C&T
Oct 27th, 2011 at 12:32pm

I realize we haven’t finished the Fall Goblet C&T yet, but we wanted to get this info out so you have plenty of time to get your piece mailed, whether you are participating in the goblet C&T or not.

Here is a new Challenge & Trade that should be able to be handled by almost all of our members.  Your new challenge is to turn a Christmas Ornament.  Aah, but not just any Christmas ornament.  Similar to last year’s C&T, it must be made from at least 2 different woods or other materials in any configuration. Whether laminated, segmented, mortise/tenon joint, or whatever.  And it must have some sort of hollow center. Such as, inside out or hollowed. And it must be different from the ornament you made for last year’s SS C&T.

We will open the gallery on Saturday, November 19.  Pictures must be posted by midnight EST Saturday, November 26.  Pairing assignments will be posted Sunday.  Like last year, we want everyone to get these before Christmas, all packages need to be postmarked by Saturday, December 3.

As was implied by the Subject Line, this will be a Mystery Round Robin style trade.  Everyone who participates will be assigned another member to surprise with their Ornament.  Don’t mention to whom or where you are sending it.  Everyone needs to post here when they ship, and again when they receive their ornament without mentioning who sent it to you.

Please sign up if you plan to participate, the more, the merrier.  But if your picture is not posted, and you haven't PM'ed your address to me, by the deadline, you will not be assigned a trade.  Also indicate in your PM whether you are willing to pay the additional postage to trade with our overseas members, if we have any participate.

OK!  You have 3 weeks to do this.  Let's get out there and turn some ornaments!  If you are not sure you can handle this, go out to your shop and try some different ideas.  It may surprise you how easy these are.  Look at the galleries from previous years for ideas.

"I dare you."

For those members who are new and wonder what a C&T might be, here is an explanation.

C&T stands for Challenge & Trade.  We define the parameters of a challenge for you to perform.  After completion, you post a picture in the new C&T area of the Gallery.  Participants will receive a PM with name and address of the member they are to send the completed item.  They will receive one from the same person if we are doing partners, or a different person if we do a Round Robin trade.  If we are doing partners and have an odd number complete the challenge, we end up with the 3 final members in a Round Robin.  Sometimes we do a Mystery Round Robin where nobody knows whose piece they will receive until they get it.

Jim says above "Also indicate in your PM whether you are willing to pay the additional postage to trade with our overseas members, if we have any participate."
I just looked up the "slow-boat" parcel post rate to the Cayman Islands and it $10.89 for one pound.  I think it is likely that many here would be willing to pay that.  It's ony about double a domestic package.  Took me a while to find that rate.  The most prominent one on the USPS site is $35.

Edit: I've checked all the rates for First Class Mail International Package, and for a 1-pound package the rate is around $11.  For a half-pound package it's around $8.  I'd pay that.

My opinion on this is not authoritative in any way, but I"ll share it anyway. That would be a hollow form, but the snowman must be from 2 different kinds of wood.
ps. make sure that the finish is correct. smiley=thumbsup.gif

Oh by the way, I'm in. I'll get to work on that after we visit with our granddaughters out west.

i hate to say this so soon after committing- im going to have to pull out of this c&t. i'm having  problems with the motor in my (brand new) mini lathe Cry Cry Angry and i am not sure my larger lathe would be capable of what i had planned (and could do with the wood i have on hand)- too much vibration.

I just re read the guidelines and noticed that it had to be something different from what I made last year. Since I made a birdhouse last year, does that rule out a different birdhouse for this year?

I have mine mostly complete.  It just needs assembly and spraying with CLEAR lacquer.  I showed it to my wife, and she was dismayed I was sending it away.  Now I have to make her one like it.  I've learned a lot doing this, including hollowing something for the first time.  Quarter-inch walls are a little thick, but I decided to avoid the "just-one-more-cut" trap.  I did manage to destroy my first attempt.

OK I have several candidates and I can't decide which of them to use for this challenge and which go out for other secret Santa acts. Should I post a group shot and let the group decide or just draw finials?

I'm posted and without drawing finials or straws, changed my mind and I'm not sending a birdhouse again.

It looks like three of us are all in. How many more to join us?

These are too fun to miss out on. I especially love seeing everyone else's take on the design parameters and having the chance to hold someone else's work.

I've got 2 of the 3 pieces done.  Now if the weather holds tomorrow.  I had to redo the hollowed globe due to IFO's.

Anybody else getting close?

Well, you have about a day and a half left.  Don't forget that in addition to posting in the "2011 Christmas Ornament C&T" gallery, you need to PM your mailing address to me, even if you have sent it for a previous C&T.

I just uploaded my ornament photo and sent Jim my address.  For those of you who may be new (like myself) and don't know, you have to register seperately for the gallery.  Just signing in on the forum doesn't automatically allow you to upload photos to the gallery.  Just go to the register button on the gallery page and sign up.
Thanks to all who have offered me advice and encouragement as I have been learning how to turn ornaments, especially Bob for the video.  I have made four so far and I am seeing improvement on each one.

Great to have your addition Dan. The C&Ts are fun to do and it is fantastic to get a chance to see someone else's work. Especially since we are so scattered across the globe.

More people need to join in. If I can make over 20 birdhouse ornaments in a day, surely more people can do at least one. This shouldn't be impossible but it is best to stretch yourself at least a little.

Remember, you get out what you put in.

Heading out to finish my second one.  LOML saw the first one and I think I might end up in the dog house if she doesn't have one before I head to the post office with one to somewhere else.  Will take pics and post when I get back in.  Later guys & gals.

The assignments have been made with the help of Random.org.  They are               About to be PM'ed to each participant.  Remember that this is a "Secret Santa Trade," so don't post who you are sending it too, just that it has been sent.  Likewise, post when you get yours, but don't say who sent it.  When all are acknowledged, then you can thank the sender.

Like last year, we want everyone to get these before Christmas.  Please, try to get all packages postmarked by Saturday, December 3.

And thank you for joining us in this Challenge.  I hope you each learned something new in the process.  Now I have to go out in the shop and make another one for my wife.

Mine should have gotten there last week. Now why to we call it "snail mail"? I hope they didn't think it was a bomb. I shipped it in a tube with wooden end caps. I did the same with the fall challenge and that worked fine so I thought it would be good for another go.

It shouldn't tick but I kind of wonder if the eyelet and the wire I made a hook made someone take a look. What would the x-ray show, surely I do not know. A wooden ball, some wire, and two thin stick, someone must be up to tricks.

Mine arrived, and had similar metal bits, so maybe the people watching you are more careful than the people watching me.

Just learned that I received a nice package in the mail Monday.  No damage other than the two big holes in the side.  Then again, they might have been there before.  Sorta look like bug damage.  Very nice.

Well I have been a really bad boy this year.  It may have something to do with leaving venision jerky and cheap beer last year.

Everyone's ornament has arrived so you are free to thank them directly.

I want to thank Andy Kurek.  In addition to the hot air balloon(which LOML captured), he sent me Christmas tree light bulb ornament.  Thank you.

I got Bob Hamilton's snowman ornament, which arrived the very day we were decorating the tree.  It was the first ornament on the tree, after the star and lights of course.  Thanks, Bob!

I am enjoying my wood bell from David Hamann.  It is hanging on my tree.  After Christmas, it will go into my shop, where I have an area dedicated to turnings from other turners.  I use it as inspiration and I can enjoy them all the time.-Andy

My ornament came all the way from AZ from Mr. Jim Quarles and what beauty it is.  It now occupies an honored place on the foyer table.  When folks ask if I made it I have to be honest and say that I am not that good yet.  It is a lovely piece of work.  Thanks Jim

I am already getting ideas for next year if you guys do this again.
