Christmas Camera search
11/22/11 at 07:19:51

My wife says I'm very hard to get a Christmas gift for and I'm being no help with ideas. She does realize I could greatly use a camera to take pics of my woodturnings for posting.
We however don't know hardly anything about purchasing a camera to get nice, sharp close-ups of the woodturnings.
Seems the camera shops of the past are no longer available in our area within an hour drive and I'm sure not impressed with the info[or lack of] salespeople seem to hand out
What model and type of camera[s] work for our forum members here would be of great interest to me.
Any input ? Thanks so much dankk2

Good Question Ron, hard to answer, I am hoping to get a price range from posted replies. From the info I've picked up looks like $600.00 is average but I'm hoping for the $400.00 dollar range to spend.

Buck,

My wife and I have this camera, it’s great for an amateur easy to learn and lots of great features.  My one friend who owns a photo business highly recommends this model for newbies.   I think it takes great pics,  easy to use and gets great reviews.  Just my 2 cents.

How much camera experience to you have? My preference is a digital SLR, but I've been playing with cameras for years. There are a number of simple point and shoot cameras available that can also take great photos of your turnings. Then again, many of the lower-end SLRs (like the Nikon D3000) can also be very simple to use. Pretty much all of them have an automatic mode that will nearly always take great shots with no knob twisting or button pushing.

Simple to answer Vaughn-just point and shoot  Undecided. I would also like to mention I would like the camera to be able to make a photo to pass the standard requirements[resolution] for the calendar contest here at the site.
Thanks for the replies so far,I've been researching those mentioned  Smiley

If your looking to save some cash, check out this Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register, its refurbished but its directly from Canon. I have this camera and love it but mine cost alot more than this. Its a point and shoot with auto focus and a bunch of extra's if your willing to take the time to read the book and learn how to do the extra stuff... which I haven't... yet.

Buck,
Cameras are kind of like cars... everybody has their own favorite brand. Some like Chevy, some like Ford, etc.
I have been a fan of the Canon cameras for many years but Nikon is an excellent brand too. Currently I'm using a PowerShot SX230 HS which costs just a bit over $300, and I like it a lot. You can see it along with all of Canon's current lineup at: Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.

Like the other folks often say... I have no connection with Canon or any other manufacturer, just a satisfied user.
Good luck in your hunt.

Both of the two Canons linked above are point and shoot models. They're sophisticated, but still simple to run in Automatic mode. And either of them would be more than capable of taking a photo worthy of a calendar contest. (Actually, even a low-end point and shoot can take high resolution photos. The better cameras will tend to take better photos, though.)

Don brings up a good point about brands. Canon and Nikon pretty much run the show (much like Husqvarna and Stihl do with chainsaws). The other brands also make some good cameras, but Canon and Nikon are the market leaders for a reason. I'm a Nikon guy, but I wouldn't turn down a chance to own a Canon either. I currently use two Nikon DSLRs and a little Sony pocket camera. My next camera will be a Samsung (Galaxy S2 Android phone). Wink

Whatever you do, don't fall for the "more megapixels=better pictures" campaign that they recently started.  Quality glass is the key here.  I bought my wife a Sony with a Carl Ziess lens.  This thing is awesome on the pics-never had any reason to complain. 7 megs should be enough.

+1 on the glass that is the key to quality.

Not much I can add.  I have a friend that purchased one of the new Nikon's point and shoot 12MP and high zoom (36-40).  He just drops it in his shirt pocket and leave his DLSRs at home now.  He is really crazy about it.  I will try to find out the model if you want.

High megapixals comes into play if you are going to make large (20 to 36 inch) prints.
