4000 Members!
Dec 18th, 2011 at 3:03pm

MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!

Announcing a new wood trade to celebrate reaching 4000 members.  We doubled in size in less than 2 years!
Ladies and gentlemen, YOU are the reason Woodturners Resource exists.  Since we have reached this incredible count we want to celebrate by having a wood trade.

Here is how it works.
Send me a PM with your mailing address and any woods you are allergic to.
Go to the post office and obtain a flat rate box.(they are free)
New this time you must designate whether you want to trade a MEDIUM or LARGE flat rate box, or One or More of Either or Both! I will be keeping 2 lists, one for Medium, and another for Large.
Cut some of your local wood to shape and size so that it will fill that box.
Just after the deadline I will send out the name and address of the person you will send your box to and then sit back and wait for a similar box to arrive at your house.

Once the deadline to send in your name and address arrives, I will put the names into a name randomizer and assign who you will send wood to.  Once those names are announced, you may either simply surprise your recipient or contact them via PM to see what their preferences are and then fill their desires.  Personally, I prefer surprises and will have my box filled long before the names are drawn.

So, get your names and addresses to me via PM, fill those boxes, and let the games begin.

Deadline to have names and addresses in:  Thursday, 12/29/2011, midnight CST
Recipients to be announced no later than:   Saturday, 12/31/2011
Wood in the mail no later than:                   Saturday, 1/7/2012

IMPORTANT!!  PLEASE READ!!  There are lots of creepy crawlies that have infested much of our wood here in the USA.  Because of that fact, borders have tightened on raw wood.  Even within the country I understand that the PO is watching things a bit more closely.  Besides we don't want to be responsible for the spread of insects that can devastate our supply of raw material.  I would ask that everyone PLEASE remove all bark from your wood. Do NOT send any Walnut or Ash. Both woods are under quarantine.  Do NOT ship any wood that has obvious borer presence.
I would further suggest that you fully tape all the seams and corners of the box so that any critters that do make it through your diligent inspection will be contained until it arrives at its destination.  If you used a sealer on the end grain, place the wood inside a plastic bag in the box.

Therefore:
This trade will be restricted to inside the borders of the USA.  (So sorry to have to do this  Cry )

If there is interest, we could run a separate trade for our Canadian members.  Is there an equivalent to USPS Flat Rate Boxes?

Let's get ready to do some trading!

Those I've received PM's from and box size:

Medium Box:                        Large Box:
Jim Quarles                          Kevin Stanbary
Doug Miller                           Dave Miller
                                           Bill Schoppert
                                           Doug Miller

NOTE:  If you want to be included in the trade I need your mailing address and what size box you wish to trade sent to me via PM.  These messages are how I am able to check myself.  Thanks for your cooperation so that I can hopefully keep this all straight.

If you look through the profiles, you will also find a lot of people who haven't logged on in 3-4 years. I always wonder if they gave up turning, or found something here unsatisfactory, or (since many of us are older) dropped off due to health problems.

The board was started in 2002?, and in March, 2004, it was so badly hacked that Chris started all over again in April, 2004.  It took until 2010 to reach 2000 members.  We hit 3000 members in January, 2011, 3500 in July, 2011, and 4000 members this week.

It wasn't widely known, but we used to drop folks off the membership list after a lengthy period of inactivity.  We don't do that now unless there is a problem.  Numbers have been escalating for a while now.  It is my belief that we have the best thing going on the web.  I've looked at several other sites and cannot believe how much better WR is than the others that are out there.  Main reason?  The 4000 members and especially the ones that are active.  It is you men and women who make this the #1 destination in the turning internet world.  Thanks to you all.

So far we have 17 boxes to be passed from one end of the country to the other.  Surely there are more of you who would like to play our little game of "What's In The Box."  It really is like getting another Christmas present, no matter what time of the year we play.  Some have loads of only one type of wood and want some variety.  Some are looking for something different that they stash they have piled up in the corner of the shop.  Some want green.  Some want dry.  Some want pen blanks while others are looking for bowl blanks.  Only thing I'll guarantee is that you won't know what's coming until you open your box (that is unless your sender contacts you  and blabs).

WHO ELSE IS GOING TO PLAY?!

Glad to hear it.  I think I'll send wood too.  So are several others, so many that we have 17 boxes moving about the country side.  I'm surprised that there aren't twice that many.  We still have time!  Lots of names can come in over the next week.

Only a little over 48 hours left to get your name to Rev and get in on the trade.

You don't have to buy wood to do this, just cut local wood to fill a box.

Just make sure that you are not shipping any quarantined wood or pesky critters in the box.  If it is green wood that has been sealed, be sure to pack it inside a plastic bag so the wax doesn't bleed through the cardboard box and get people upset.

ENTRIES ARE OVER!

In the next little bit I will be putting all the names in the randomizer and making the pairings.  Be on the look-out for a PM telling you what the address of your recipient is.  I hope you are as excited about all this as I am.  Always fun.  Usually a great surprise.

After randomizing the lists 3 times each, the pairings were made.  All PM's have been sent out.  If you don't find a message from me in your inbox, contact me ASAP so that I can get the address of your wood to you.  Being as the PO is closed on Monday, you have an extra day to get it packed up if you don't already have it boxed and ready to go.  Let the mailing, and Postal Carriers making Chiropractic visits, begin.  Grin Grin

Mine is packed (has been for about 2 weeks), labeled with postage, and ready to go out on the front porch for the mailman to pick up tomorrow.

In case you didn't know, you can save $.45 on a Medium Flat Rate Box, and $.75 on the large if you print your label and pay for your postage online.  You also get free delivery confirmation.  Go to Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register and click on ship a package, then on Print label with Postage.  Go through the steps to print the label and pay for postage with a credit card.

Flew through P.O. on the way home and grabbed a box.

Got home, packed it all up, weighed, printed postage and was preparing to apply label when:

I noticed the box I have is for APO/FPO addresses only.  I didn't even know there was such a thing!   smiley=shake head.gif

Guess I'll grab another box on the way in to work tomorrow, repackage it in the office and drop it off at lunch.

I wonder if someone's trying to tell me something?  Roll Eyes

Seems that the route carrier left a box full of apple, smoke bush, ramon burl, and something unknown in my mail box yesterday.  Looks like there ought to be some interesting things come out of it all someday soon.  Thank so much Guy.  I look forward to getting into it all.

Guys, FYI the PO isn't open when I go to work & it closes way before I get out of work. So like today my boss forced me to work my day off so I was able to go by one on the way to my route & mail mine.

I am thinking that we should not wait untill we hit 4500 or 5000 members to have another trade.  Maybe 4250 or even 4100.  This is great fun.  Thanks WR.

Darn, sorry about that, it was okay when I cut it. but it sat for two or three days in the box before I sent it. I guess better now than after a lot of work went into it.

My package from Erik arrived yesterday!  It was like Christmas all over again when I was unpacking it.  I can't wait to try the Russian Olive.  Thank you so much!!

In other news, my package to Scott Scalco went out on Friday.  I realized after I had it all taped up that I didn't include a note or anything.  Sorry!  I think everything is labeled as much as I knew.  I didn't harvest any of the wood myself, but I've acquired it from other turners here in the St. Louis area.  Our turning community is very generous toward those of us who don't have any trees to cut down Smiley

OMG, I just opened Mary Poppin's bag disguised as a large flat rate box.  Seriously I don't think I could have squeezed a dime in there.  Pieces of Holly, Teak, Sandalwood, Madrone, a nice big piece of Fir root burl and some spalted Maple to name a few.  The stuff just kept coming out.

Thanks Bill!   smiley=dankk2.gif Looks like this is going to be fun.

If we did it after every 100 new members, not everyone would have received their box before they have to pack another.  We have added 83 new members in the last 23 days.

I got a bulging box today from Mark Warren.  It was so full the the PO had to put extra tape on it to keep it closed.  That must explain why a Priority mail package took 5 days from Missouri.  A couple nice chunks of Cherry, some OLD Osage Orange, and some Walnut & pen blanks.  And then there is another chunk of Dunno wood.

Thanks Mark

Does everyone realize that we are adding more than 100 new members each month.  It has been 28 days since we hit 4000, and we have added another 101 so far.

So was this a straight across trade or was someone different to send me wood than the person I sent wood to. If so, anyone happen to know who was to send me wood. I sent mine out but I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet or even heard from who was to send me wood.  Just wondering if someone knows or how I can find out. Cry

A month ago, we hit 4000 members.  In one month we have added 117 new members.  At this rate we will hit 4500 before the end of April.

What has made this board so great, is all the members that work (and play) as a team.  Thank you!  Keep up the good work.
