Our workshop
12/22/11 at 07:03:09

Finally getting around to posting pics of our shop.
It started out as a prefab 16x16 2 story “barn” like you see at HD. It was already on the property when we bought the house a year ago. Original owner had insulated upstairs and down, paneled upstairs and covered all of the walls downstairs with pegboard.
In late summer, we took the stairwell out of the inside, put a new stairwell/deck/door on the back of the building to access the upstairs and to gain additional space on both levels. We poured a 13x16 slab in front and put a steel roof over the slab. Replaced all of the doors with 15 light steel doors and installed electric under the new roof so that we can roll the small lathe outside for sanding etc. We also replaced the pegboard behind the 1642 with drywall. We are eventually getting around to painting all of the remaining pegboard white and will replace the pegboard where it was cut out to accommodate the old stairwell on the back wall
As you can see from the pictures, we have both a Jet 1642-2VS and a Jet 1220. Grinding station set up along the back wall, drill press and small band saw. To the left of the band saw is our lapidary trim saw and cabochon machine. The work bench in the middle of the shop is on rollers so we can roll outside, again to get the sanding & saw dust out of the shop when we can.
Everything by the big lathe has shower curtains to keep the dust down. We have also installed shower curtains on the lower section of the rolling workbench and the shelves over the scroll saw.
You can’t see them very well in the pictures but there are pull down window shades to the right and behind where the operator would stand when using the 1642. We pull these down when we’re roughing out using our EWT’s to keep the chips from going all over the shop.
Yes, it has a functioning AC!

Jeff,

Rolling table was homemade. Glued up 2x4's for the legs, turned them round in the middle (my first  project on the new 1642) left square at top & bottom for 2x4 framing pieces. Top is a desk top I got from the local thrift store, bottom shelf is 1/2 ply. Rollers are from Rockler, they look like rollerblade wheels, 200# rated. Overall dims were based on the desk top.

Joseph,

Upstairs is the boss' art studio where she does her magic. Also used for drying blanks. Wood storage in in the back under the new deck.
