There is a reason they call them SPINDLE gouges!  You use them on spindles!  Maybe you can use them on bolw's but NOT on bowls.

This is the clearest explanation of the issues of gouge use on face turning I've seen.

Thanks for posting.

Hi John,
GREAT video !!  I have a better understanding of the pull cut now.
Is the pull cut you were showing us a bevel rubbing cut? Sorry if I'm a little dense.  Also, do you sharpen your gouges freehand or use a jig?

Thanks again for your great work.

It is a bevel rubbing cut. This cut works fine as long as your handle is lowered. If the handle is level, the wings can catch. If you cut with the handle level, like I do, you need to rotate the winds to 90 degrees, or 3 o'clock and it becomes a scraping cut.

dankk2 Thanks for this instructional video. I'm new to turning, I'm new to this Woodturner's Resource and I'm new to posting to the forum. While most of my bowl turns thus far have been 'sub-par' at best, this site, along with great videos like this one, are the reason I find I'm making progress in an attempt to learn properly.

On another post, I was reading where one should be alert to watching some videos on Youtube. There, I learned just enough to make a few rather dangerous mistakes in turning, which I might never have made had I found this resource sooner. I appreciate the "close-up" views in this video on how to hold certain tools. This was very much useful for me.

I'm now in the market for a better Bowl Gouge and a decent slow speed sharpening system with a jig. I take it day by day and learn more simply by listening and just doing. So, again...thanks for sharing. Your time in making the video is a blessing only out weighed by the joy of actually making progress when seeing a hunk of log come to life. Peace!
