Holy cannoli! How is he holding that?  And no face mask!  That ball has to weigh 30#.  I must be turning into a wuss, because stuff like that scares the daylights out of me.

I have not heard "Holly Cannoli" in 40 years.

You must be a wuss because it is only water.

This gives a whole new definition to "Cool Turning". If the piece comes loose and hits him, would he be knocked out cold?

John, the Japanese turn like that and its pretty safe too. If he gets a catch the tool drops down without grabbing material.

I guess if the does get some tear out he can use water to repair the damage... or just rub his hand over it to smooth it out.

Cliff, you can take the boy out of Brooklyn, but...

I was thinking more if the ice fractured, rather than a catch per se. I've seen that kokeshi doll video before, and I was interested by his technique.  It seems the English-speaking turning world simply does not use ring chucks.  We see the Japanese use them, I can find them from German vendors, but US or UK?  Nah.

Especially scary since the white section in the middle is a flaw caused by air bubbles trapped in the ice.

I must admit I have never seen a lathe with a sliding tool rest.

If you look at the entire lathe, the whole thing looks custom made, all aluminum.

I am not crazy about the motor fins being right next to the tool rest though. Granted that probably would be the exhaust but ice chips right next to a motor vent, if I was using it water WOULD get into the motor.  Sad

The nice thing is that you don't have to work in a freezer. The ice has to temper by coming up to just a couple degrees below freezing. If it is too cold, it shatters like glass. I think I'll stick to turning wood and carving ice with a chain saw and carving tools. I used to carve ice every once in a while when I worked as a chef. One of the few treats I got once in a while.

Nah, watch him, he "hand sands" it!!  Does give me a new meaning for hand sanding the finish.
Seriously, I like that sliding tool rest thingy.
