need to make a lathe tool holder stand or rack
03/22/12 at 16:36:08

Before I make one for my lathe tools I would like to hear from fellow turners who have already made one for themselves or has an idea that works. Since asking for help on things I have been so blessed to be able to do things I would never been able to do without everyones help. I want one that can hold all my tools in a central location I can reach easily from my lathe. I will probably put wheels on it. I am thinking of an upright rack that the tools can sit horizontally in brackets. But if you have some pic's let me see them thanks

Well Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register, someone had one on a lazy susan and it really looked good but I can't remember who it was, I think they had their grinder on it too.

When I first got my lathe, actually before it I got a piece of 12x12 wood and drilled 1 inch holes a couple inches apart in rows. This hold many tools in a small space. I have seen pvc cut off to hold tools and some day I may go that route. Also 1 inch holes hold drill chucks and spur drives etc. Let us see what you come up with.
My tool rack was fastened to the side of a shelf within easy range, now I have a full size lathe and moved it but I think I will make a better one myself. My floor space is tight so I will need wall mount.

One thing I've learned from my little tool rack-->  If you make one, make sure you can shop vac the chips out of it easily once it's tim for cleanup.

I went the PVC route and it works great. You can use different size diameter to hold different size tools, mount them to the wall, mount them on a cart, or wherever. I used the blue plumber's instant epoxy stuff to make a nice row of them (think pan flute), then bungeed the row to the wall for now since I'm eventually going to move them onto a separate cart when I get my big-girl lathe.

Erika I love the big girl lathe statement, I understand because for years I wanted my big boy lathe, and now that I have it I want to make a functional but effective storage rack. Thanks for all the tips from all of you. dankk2

Don't you have to actually become a big girl first, short stuff?  Grin

And here...I'll spare you the trouble:  slap  lolk  Actually, you seemed to get along pretty well with my PM. Wink

Breck, here's what I use for my most-used tools. I've got others in drawers.

It's a bottomless plywood box with PVC pipes in two rows.

I cut the ends of the PVC at an angle so I could access the screws. I also intentionally made it bottomless so it doesn't fill up with shavings. It's also a freestanding unit, so I can move it around the shop (even set it on the lathe bed) if needed.

Speaking of most-used tools.
On another forum I saw an articulated arm that was used for current tool usage.  I KNOW this is a light but remove the fixture and add a rack to hold 4-6 tools and you can position it where you want it easily.  I think the guy used a short section of closet shelving, the lip was use as the handle rest and the top vertical was cut off and the uprights bent over to prevent the tools from sliding sideways.

That would be perfect for my light. No mater where I put it is not giving me light or in the way. Not my primary light be I should have got it first day I started tuning.
Years ago they made a clamp on desktop light, heavy duty. I keep looking at yard sells etc but can't find it.
I think I am getting off subject here but light is a tool as far as I am concerned.

Mike I like your easily moveable tool caddy, how cool. I like anything that can be moved around if it needs to be.

Scott, I built an articulating arm for a Moffatt light over my lathe, and would hate to turn without it anymore. I think I posted a thread about it here a couple or three years ago, but I'm unable to find it using the Search feature here. If need be, I can repost the info and photos in a new thread.

Yes if you can find it post it. I would guess it has springs which I don't have. I have thought about making one but hoped that I would be able to fit one of the old ones. I am thinking about making a tool stand like the above as I already have around table on wheels I can use. Problem is it takes up more floor space which I don't want.  The clamp on light I have now has a coil arm but it's to whimpy to stand on it's own.

I recently made a tool caddy that is working very well. I think it may be the one that Wizzy mentioned. I am very happy with how it helps me stay organized. KC
