Turners Smock Useful?
04/12/12 at 13:36:21

Do many of you use a turners smock at all? I would like something to keep the chips from going down my shirt and all over my arms and on my pants etc. so I could just take it off and not have as much of me to clean up before going in cause I have to keep the Ms. happy and she doesnt want dust/chips in the house!!   But I dont have to have anything fancy and costly..Any suggestions ?

Yes I always wear one as my shop is in the house, if I drag chip upstairs (and often do) the boss gets a little irked.  Big plus is keeping the chips from going down the shirt  this can get real irritating. CSUSA has a few selections also check Packard Woodworks, the different styles are personal preference.

I've often thought that a smock would be nice, but the prices have turned me off.

Commercial smocks come with either short or long sleeves - I would prefer a long sleeve version.  A loose cuff is dangerous - long sleeved turner's smocks all have elastic sleeves for safety.

You can get by with a zippered jacket.  Next time I'm in the neighborhood,  I'm going to stop at the Salvation Army store to see if they have a light jacket that I can use for turning.  For now, I using an old long-sleeve shirt (with the cuff of the left sleeve always buttoned).  I get chips in the pocket, but since it stays in the shop, that's OK.

I usually wear a light turtleneck shirt. I read a thread here where someone was at a training meeting and the subject came up. There was a whole lot of discussion until a woman at the meeting piped up that and showed them how she'd put her husband's dress shirt on backwards and said something about the difference in cost between the shirt and the smock.

That being said, I'd love to have a smock but for the $80+, I'd rather buy a new tool first.

I wear the Lee Valley smock and wouldn't be without it, simply because of the chips down the shirt and filling the jeans pockets issue.  I would prefer a different method of keeping the sleeves snug at the wrist than the knitted cuff, though.  The cuffs are shavings magnets and once the shavings are tangled in the weave they are difficult to get off.

I have a nylon windbreaker.  It's not too hot, and it sheds all the chips and dust with a shake.  I got it free as an a premium years ago.

I didn't care for the price and availability of turner smocks when I went to purchase one, but I stumbled across the following link.  It's identical to the more expensive smocks I had been looking at but only $25!  I love mine.  The flames are really cool   Cheesy

Get a new wife?  Grin

(Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I've not tried turning in a smock , since the prices have kept me away. In warm weather, I just wear a t-shirt and use an air nozzle to clean off afterward. In cold weather, it's either a long-sleeved t-shirt or a light jacket with knit cuffs on the sleeves. I do like the idea of a thin nylon windbreaker from a thrift store, though.

I gotta agree with Bob.   I'd thought of using a paddling jacket, since they have neoprene collar and cuffs, which would shed chips better...but they aren't really any cheaper and tend to be too short, so chips would still get in pants pockets.
Despite the irksome knit cuffs, I don't regret the sunk cost of the Lee Valley smock (which lives in my basement shop).  I also slip into old rubber boots (with pants on the outside of the boot) when I turn so that chips don't get tracked upstairs.
Maintaining domestic tranquility is paramount!

Get an Under Armour shirt.  They fit tight at the neck and the chips does not stick to them.

I got an AAW smock several year ago from a guy who was replacing it with a long sleeved one.  I've have loved it and used it ever since.  Starting to show its age though.  I'm thinking about replacing it with a new one from EWT.  The cost does hurt a bit, but the return is worth it to me.
Cool

I know what you mean. Once you get so many years of depreciation on them, they have almost no trade-in value, so it makes better sense to just hang onto them, huh?  lolk
