I've often thought that a smock would be nice, but the prices have turned me off.

Commercial smocks come with either short or long sleeves - I would prefer a long sleeve version.  A loose cuff is dangerous - long sleeved turner's smocks all have elastic sleeves for safety.

You can get by with a zippered jacket.  Next time I'm in the neighborhood,  I'm going to stop at the Salvation Army store to see if they have a light jacket that I can use for turning.  For now, I using an old long-sleeve shirt (with the cuff of the left sleeve always buttoned).  I get chips in the pocket, but since it stays in the shop, that's OK.

I got a turtle neck shirt from Duluth trading. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.

The sleeves are tight enough that there is no worry about them getting caught, and the tail is long enough it covers the pockets in my pants, I hate it when I run to the store and pull out my change buried in wood shavings.

I had tried a long sleeved backless smock from Packard's Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register but it was too hot in the summer. Also a surplus flying suit but it did not have a good enough collar and chips would get in, and it was a pain to get into and out of.

I had looked for a long time and did not want to spend  big money for a smock. I did filially find a new canvas smock for .25 cents. It does have pockets so I wear it backwards but the majority of chips hit my smock and go done to the floor. The best quarter I ever spent. I won't even turn on my lathe without wearing now, my clothes stay much cleaner. I don't live in a big city so my choices for buying are limited.

You mean like the classic panty hose problem?

Scotchguard would prevent staining, but probably wouldn't help with static cling.

Washing it, and then using one of those fabric softener sheets in the dryer when drying it might help.

I don't know if it is still around, but there used to be a product called Static Guard that was good for that.  When I was hauling computer equip, I frequently used it to help cut down static with nylon parkas in the winter.

I remember using it quite a bit when I had more polyester clothing than I do now.

I must be to red neck, i usualy turn in my T shirt. That must explain why my wife gets mad at me when I come into the house after a day of turning.

Don, that is what I usually wear, but I use the smocks when helping at demos and as a jacket when turning in the winter.

I find my nylon windbreaker convenient because I can interrupt turning, take it off and some compressed air to blow any debris off my pants and shoes, and I'm presentable enough to go in the house without causing a ruckus.  This is important because I have the attention span of a gnat, so I like to break for 15 minutes for every hour of turning.  If I do that, I can turn all day if I want.  If I don't take breaks, I can only last 2-3 hours.
