looking for a good drill press
04/18/12 at 01:27:23

Hello Everyone! I'm looking to get a new drill press for my shop as I'm wanting to begin turning pens Smiley
I decided it would be best to ask all my fellow turners whom might own a drill press and get the low down on what would be the best to use for going through exotic woods and whatnot

I have around six to eight hundred dollars for this shop improvement.
Help me spend my money  Smiley

Ryan,
I wouldn't attempt to tell you which brand you should buy... there are many good ones out there. However, I would tell you that it is important to check the amount of vertical travel of the quill. Some drill presses (usually tabletop models) only have about 2" of travel. Obviously if you are drilling blanks that are 2-1/8" or longer, that is not going to do the job! (Oh yeah... DON'T ASK ME HOW I LEARNED THAT!!!)  Embarrassed  With the budget you mentioned, I think you can get a really nice drill press... and perhaps have enough leftover for a good turning tool or two.

As Don suggests, quill travel is important. Equally important is the available speeds.  I would look for a good import (Jet or similar) that is a 12 speed machine.  It's one thing finding the right speed for a 1/2" bit, quite another to find the right speed for that 2 1/2" multi-spur bit.  Too many drill presses don't have those lower speed ranges and the result is bits ruined by over heating.

If you are just driling pen blanks why not do it on the lathe.  I have found that is about as accurate as you can get and you don't have to worry about quill travel.  Even if you buy a dedicated chuck, drill chuck with mt2 and a gob of drill bits you will not get to 6 or 8 hundred.  I would guess less then three hundred even with pretty high end stuff.  I use my drill press a lot but not for drilling pen blanks any more.  Of course if you are a tool junkie like most of use you will get a drill press as they are great for a lot of uses.  Most of the imports are good drill presses, such as HF, Griz, Jet etc,

I don't know what other things you need to bore through other than pens, so here goes. You have a choice of tabletop or floor standing. If you choose a TT model, thay are fine for pen blanks and usually less expensive. although, as mentioned earlier, the quill travey may be an issue.
If you choose a FM, you are not limited by the machine, but these can get out of your stated price range quickly.
These are suggestions only. I don't own either of these machines.

As a pen turner, Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register is the one I bought, primarily for its quill travel, 4 7/8".  I haven't had any trouble with it at all.  16 speed, 215 - 3000 RPM.

'Not sure if it will help, but here's a review of the Delta (~$580), Jet (~$510) and Powermatic (~$1,000).

I like JIm's Drill press and I have one that's 1/8 inch short in travel for a pen blank. You don't want that kind.

beer wow thanks everyone for the many responses!

You know Larry now that you mentioned the special drill chuck, it brings back to my memory the fact that I wanted to get one of those quite some time ago but I completely forgot about them.

Would you happen to be able to recommend a good place to acquire a drill chuck? I can't really see getting a drill press right now when all I think I would be using it for would be boring the holes for pens or bottle stoppers or maybe even the special spinning tipped tops when I could save some money and spend that on turning blanks  Smiley

Thanks again everyone for the great insight on the drill presses. Once I can figure out what else I could use a drill press for that I couldn't just do on my lathe then I'll put more thought into getting one   thumbsup

Okay, it was sort of silly to ask where to go about getting a drill chuck. I just checked woodcraft and they have a few. Would you be able to recommend one that would better over the others? I'm completely new to turning pens so I have no idea what I'm doing  Smiley

A drill chuck has two parts, the chuck and the arbor, which can be purchased separately.  Aside from the Morse taper that goes in the quill, there is usually a Jacobs taper that holds the chuck to the arbor.  If you think you might ever use the Jacobs to hold small work in the headstock spindle, you need to pay attention to two things: the arbor should be threaded for a drawbar to hold it securely in the spindle under power, and you should get a chuck that threads to the arbor (or is made as one  integral piece).  Look at the alternatives Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register and Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.

Depending on your inclination towards new or used drill presses, you might look over at owwm.org to see if there's anything used available in your neighborhood.

CAUTION: this website will incite drooling over old machines of the worst kind.

I know it is counter to the advice usually given here, but several years ago I got a Harbor Freight drill press.  It is a table top model that I built a stand for.  I was surprised that of the models they sell, this one has the longest quil travel.  Does the job for me.
Cool
