EWT Rougher.

I just gotta ask about this tool. I have a homemade ewt c01 thanks to another member here and I like it for certain things.
I just can't see any advantage to the rougher. I can control a roughing gouge to through chips away from my face usually and it is one the easiest tools to sharpen. So what is the advantage of the ewt rougher.

They come in hands when your turning very dry, very hard wood like oak, hickory and other hard woods that are completely dry. Plus their fun to use when you really want to "hog" out a lot when your plunge cutting a wet blank. I can remove more wood with the EWT tool in on pass plunge cutting than I can with a normal bowl gouge.

The Ci0 is great for concave curves, but doesn't do well for convex curves.  The Ci1 or Ci2 handles them much better.  I prefer the 2" or 4" radius inserts for them.  I can cut a smoother curve with the slight radius than I can with the square insert.  Even a mostly dull edge on a Ci1 will do a good job of roughing.  I will turn pens with a Ci1 4"R until the final pass and then switch to another with a fresh edge.  After that I go straight to 400 grit or MicroMesh.

Ditto what the guys said. besides it's fun to use & it does a great job at either hogging out or a delicate pass. It's just another tool in your arsenal.

For me there is no advantage on spindle work over a roughing gouge in fact I'd say it is a disadvantage. On face plate work it's a different story though.

They are scrapers, plain and simple. You don't sharpen them. Most HSS scrapers with that narrow of a profile are only 1/4 inch thick. I prefer my scrapers to be 3/8 inch thick. They will do the exact same job.

I have to agree with robo hippy, I use mine but to be honest a sharp scraper works a little better for me most of the time. I do use it like Chuck says it is just another tool in our arsenal.

Thanks, I try to sort out the really need to 'want' tools. Some day when I have some play money I will give it another look.

One big advantage to the Ci1 for roughing is the shaft size and weight. It is less fatiguing when roughing out a large blank, particularly if it is not round, and you find yourself cutting a lot of air. (yes, a very heavy scraper will do the same thing, you just have to sharpen it) Less sharpening= more turning, and that is what makes it more fun for me.

Like everything else in turning, the experience is wholly dependent on who is holding the tool. Jim prefers to make convex curves with the rougher with a 2" or 4" radius insert, and I prefer to use the finisher with the handle nearly parallel to the bed. EWT tools aren't a necessity, but I highly doubt you will find very many people who regret buying one.

I have a Ci0 finisher that I usually just use to clean up after hollowing items with small openings. I prefer it over the scrapers because it is so much heavier and longer. Just remember that the EWT tools are specialized scrapers and not a true gouge. Control is sketchy but sometimes you can roll the tool a bit and get more of a shearing cut. The bits do get dull but just not as often. A little touch up once in a while face down on a diamond stone helps but doesn't get you back to the factory fresh edge.

I love it for faceplate roughing of very dry, hard woods. Can't beat it.

The stiff shaft makes it a nice scraper for inside bowls. It can make a clean shear cut if you tip it on edge like you would a traditional scraper.
