Hook and loop material
04/27/12 at 05:18:56

I finally got my manual hook and loop sanding disk kit. I like the way it works but the highest sand paper is 400. I have my own sand paper up to 3000 grit and would like to make my own to work with the sander but I am not sure whet kind of material I could use to glue to the wet dry sand paper on the sander.
Has anyone else made there own? I might ask in the sewing department at the local store but other than that I don't have a clue. While I can make my own hand pad sanding disks I like the spinning disk tool vs by fingers.

Vince has some higher grit pads that work fantastic.

I usually sand to 320 with using the disks and then from there by hand. In my experience, once you get past 320, you don't need as much work to move to the next grit. But then most of the wood I work with is rather soft and going past 800 doesn't change things much.

On some woods my 1500 and 3000 can add a lot of high gloss. I like it on my pens and some bowls. Like I said(or suggested) I make my own hand sanding disks by gluing a pad to the sand paper and cut out the pads. This keeps me from burning my fingers and helps get into odd shape areas. Since I already have bought a 50 sheets pack of these I might want to add them to my manual disk sander.
Some people think going past 400 does little in sanding. From my own experience I find this is not true. I can sand one half up to 400 and the other half with higher grits and there is a noticeable difference. Also sometimes on darker woods I use the danish oil and then while on the lathe spinning use the 1500 and 3000 grit to give a nice gloss to the wood. This does not work well on all woods and can leave dark spots on light woods. I like to experiment but it does not always work well and sometimes have to undo what I have done.

Scott, I actually agree that there are applications where going to the super fine sandpaper does make a difference. With hard woods, hardness not the class, you can get a highly polished shine without any finish by sanding to 3000. I work mostly with woods in the poplar family and it doesn't seem to show as much difference from 400 to 800. That being said, if you can sand to 3000, you can easily get a high gloss with a gloss finish. Sometimes you don't need buffing to get the desired glaze look. I've just not seen disks in grits more than 800.

I guess you could get a cloth that will stick to the hook and loop, glue that to the sandpaper, and then cut your disks from there. Gluing the cloth part of Velcro to some sand paper isn't much fun. You spend a lot of time making your own disks because the sandpaper needs to be replaced in about as much time as it takes to set it up. I just find hand sanding the high grits easier.

Robert, all that is true, but I have lots of time where I have to sit and need to find constructive things to do to keep busy and not get board. I have cut out circles of both foam pads and high grit wet dry sandpaper and used spray glue to put them together. I can wash them out and reuse them over a few times before tossing them.
I like to use every wood I can get my hands on especially free wood and found all of them can have nice grain.I have not turned much poplar but a lot of alder, might be in the same family. I just had a thought, I might try felt and see if it works.

Vince sells blue disks to at least 1200.  I have some but don't use all that often.

I didn't say Vince didn't have them, I just said I hadn't seen them.

I do agree that Vince would be the place to start.

Try Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.  I think you'll like what you see.

Another great source for high grit sandpaper with loop material already on it is Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.  They will sell you sheets of sandpaper that you can then cut into what ever shape you prefer.  If I remember correctly, the sheets are 3'x3m for $17-18 dollars.  I would give you the exact link and price, but their site is down for maintenance at the moment.  I bought a set of these sheets 7 years ago, cut them into 2" squares with a worn out bandsaw blade, and have been using them like someone else paid for them ever since.  I still have a bunch of squares ready to go.

Forgot to answer your original question.  Spray glue would do it.  It has been used for years to adhere sanding disks to disk sanders.  Contact cement would also work well.

The way I read the original question, I would suggest flannel as an appropriate material to use.  That is what most of the commercial disks I have seem to have on the back of them.

I am still working on the squares I cut from the sheets Doug was referring to:  Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

It seems to be very good, long lasting abrasive but they only go up to 600.

Take care
Bob

Have you tried looking at your local Automotive paint supply store? I carry disc in 3" and 6" in the hookit form and also a 20 yard continuious roll x 2"w I would stay away from the red 3m but the gold and purple 3m work great.

flannel, thanks I would not have thought of that. I would like to try to use what I have on hand before buying more but I need to know a good place to get them later.

Scott, you can buy 2 inch strips of "hook and Loop" material in the craft department at your local Wally world.  Both the hook and the loop pieces come in a box up to 10 feet long.  It already has the aheasive (sp?) applied.
