Make an Egg contest
Apr 28th, 2012 at 9:45pm

Yesterday and today I have been making wood eggs, simple but a little tricky to make accurate. I grabbed an egg from my refrigerator to get an idea of shape and I had an idea.
Make an egg contest, rules are simple:
1 Shape as realistic as possible
2 Any wood, any size
3 No tool marks or sand marks
4 Any finish, but part of the fun is to feel the wood and enjoy the beauty of the wood and grain.
5 Have Fun!

If it's decided to have a winner, can be Egg Queen or Egg King.

I like mine with a side of sausage or bacon.  Smiley

Maybe you could get together with Jim Q and plan a C&T.

Breck I have spent 2 hours on one I am making now but I am not going to quit until I get it right. And I thought I was the court Jester already. Smiley Smiley
Ed I don't know what a C&T is.

I think he means a challenge and trade.  I use a jig and template.  I give them away at Easter time.  I think I am going to try and make some hollow ones next year.  Good way to use up some smaller cutoffs.

I think using a template is fine, but my idea was to try and learn curves. That's what an egg is is just curves. I noticed when making a few when it does not look right sometimes just a little here and little there changes the whole look. I think anyone can make one if they put there mind to it.
I googled a bunch of pics of eggs and most looked nice but I noticed many had to sharp a point to look actuate. It is fun when you mess around with something and it finally works.
You can keep working on the same blank until it's right, it just gets smaller the more you turn on it.
I think they look nice in a bowl and they feel good when you pick them up.
I do think even a beginner can make one with just basic tools.

Sure, I would be willing to do a C&T with Jim Q if he is.
These are my first eggs. The cocobolo is ok but to sharpe at the end. The padauk looks more like a nut. The large vera wood I turned between centers and is not finished yet. The OO is about the size of a small egg and my best yet. It might just be me but there are harder to get accurate than they look. Next time I will try a different approach.

Remember to think about the rule of thirds when you turn them.  Eggs follow the rule almost exactly as do most things in nature.

Challenge and trades are usually set up by one of the admins much like a wood trade.  They can be a lot of fun, intimidating but fun.

I am not sure i understand all this but I did check with a moderator before I posted this.
It is a intimidating challenge for me but least it's not the gunfight at the ok coral. If I lose it will still be fun, hopefully.
