New SawStop
04/28/12 at 19:57:38

Just unpacked and assembled a new SawStop table saw today.  This is my third large table saw after Craftsman and Powermatic.  All I can say is WOW.  Most impressive and well built of the bunch.

Forget about the safety stuff.  The saw is BUILT and made toward the American consumer.  Quality reins throughout.

Packaging is very well, thought out and parts/components are very well protected and centered around ease of assembly.

All parts are clearly labeled.  All screws/washers/nuts/etc. are in numbered blister packs with an easy open perforated back.  The back is also printed to avid confusion.

The directions are straight forward and easy to follow.  Components are machined with tight tolerance and fit together easy and accurately.  The installation manual is the best I've ever had with a piece of power equipment----by far! Even the paper it's printed on is a higher, thicker, quality.

The cabinet (metal thickness) seems to be a bit heavier built than the other saws I've had.  The finish is a thick and strong powder coat.  There are brackets to hold wrenches, tools, parts, etc.  The saw comes with a set of alan wrenches---good ones---that are needed for the assembly.  The power cord (220 VAC) comes with a plug!  No need to attach your own 220 VAC plug.

The hardest part of assembly was attaching the heavy cast iron wings.  But this was because I did it by myself without help.  But even these fit up nicely without too much effort to align the parts correctly.

While I may not agree with the SawStop politics in forcing the safety benefits upon all manufacturers----(I believe this should be a personal choice)----I have to compliment them on building a very nice saw.

Anyway, that's a quick review on first impressions of this saw--as a saw, not a safety device.

Thanks for reading,

RB

So do I, David.  I assembled a bandsaw, a dust collector and that saw today, so not chance to try anything out other than my emergency back pain meds.  LOL.  The saw came with a carbide tipped blade.  I have that on it now and will try it out tomorrow!

Thanks!  And no hot dogs!  That clutch/stop thing cost $60 plus a blade!  But I do like the idea that it provides that safety.

Congrats, Richard. Your comments about the quality and documentation echo what I've heard others say. Even without the safety stuff, it's about the best American style cabinet saw out there.  thumbsup

Didn't I remember somebody making a similar saw that doesn't ruin the blade? I remember a video on you tube

I saw that one also---the video, that is.  I think it works on IR sensors that stop the saw if a finger gets too close to the blade.
