Mostly Red/White Oak, lots  and lots of Sycamore, Cherry, Walnut, Maple, Box Elder, Tulip Poplar, Black Gum, Sweet Gum,  Sassafras, lots of Beech and some Elm.   I am VERY lucky most of these either grow on my property or are down the street sitting in a tree trimmers yard waiting to turn into mulch that I have access too.

In the Los Angeles area, I think the only true native trees are primarily oak and manzanita, and many (maybe all?) of them are protected. But over the past hundred years or so, people have planted just about every other type of tree imaginable, so if you keep your eyes open, you can get all sorts of American, Australian and Asian hardwoods and softwoods.

Here in Albuquerque, tumbleweeds and cholla cactus are the predominant trees.  Grin  I've also seen elm, cottonwood, Russian olive, and the occasional maple or sycamore.

Here on the coast of Washington State we have Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, Western Red Cedar, Cascara, Maple, Alder, Pacific Yew, Pine, some wild Cherry, Willow, Crab Apple.  Unfortunatley not a lot of hardwoods other than the alder, maples and cascara.  Lots of ornamentals have been introduced to this area as our moderate weather supports many non-native species.  Some time ago I scored some sycamore from a tree that was 7.5' in diameter!

Here on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay we have several varieties of Oak, Hickory,Tulip Poplar, many varieties of Pine, Maples. People have planted any number of different species of ornamental trees and shrubs. The local tree guys should be your friends.

I have to pretty much copy what Vaughn said. Here in central CA,there is everything. The climate will allow just about anything to grow.
They claim that Sacramento (the city of trees) has more trees per capita than any other city in the world. Last month there was a tree drive to plant 30,000 trees in 30 days in our area. There is also a campaign to plant an additional 5 million trees by 2025.
Too many to list.

•Trees are good for our health.
•Trees are good for our neighborhoods.
•Trees are good for business.
•Trees are good for our environment.
•Trees are beautiful.
•Trees are good to turn  Grin

Great post!  Very interesting to see this information.  Not so fun to have to look up profiles and locations for those who don't mention where they live  Sad

Here in MN we have lots of oak (red, white, pin), some maple, lots of ash, some elm, birch, poplar, cherry, box elder, red cedar, lots of pine (white and red) and spruce.  Of course, and unfortunately, there is plenty of buckthorn and russian olive too.

I am a little surprised at how some spices seem to grow all over the place, and some like wild cherry are more common than I thought.
Didn't it used to say what state a person was from under our name when we post.?

You have to select that in your profile.

Lets see, locally we have madrone, white oak, black oak, poderosa pine, doug fir, manzanita, buckeye, dogwood, cherry, walnut, maple (theres something like 200 species of various maples), Golden chain, holly, laurel (they get big, so I say its a tree past 30 ft) man u name it.. chances are someones planted it. We have a vast array of climate zones and micro climates, so there isnt much that doesnt grow here. The redwoods here are amazing, the birch forests Ive seen in the valleys of the redwoods are equally amazing. I could probably go on all day thinking of all the trees I've planted here.

I have only one madrone bowl I have turned, it grows here to and I am keeping my eye out for it.
In Oregon there are way more than I mentioned, I just don't know what most of them are. There are some trees here that grow more horizontal than vertical but I have no idea what they are.

Oh Jenny,

I have seen a couple of Russian olive pieces and I would gladly send you all the Hackberry you would want for some of that.

I guess no one likes what they have a lot of.   lolk lolk

It is not that I don't like to turn russian olive and buckthorn, but they are invasive species that are very destructive to natural woods.  I have a request out on craigslist to try to find some russian olive for turning.  It looks beautiful from what I've seen from others pics.  Maybe I will get some in the wood trade. I have seen one wood come up yet,( I might have missed it) and that is aromatic cedar. I thought it grew out east and is a beautiful wood.
