Cedar also grows on the Oregon coast but it is a different type that I have seen. Darker, grain not as nice as the other I have seen but very waterproof. I made tree and plant stakes 7 years ago and with 89 inches of rain a rain there still like the day I split them.
I imagine a lot of the other kind got used up in cedar chests years ago.

We have the aromatic cedar/ eastern red cedar around here.  It is considered an invasive species and they are trying to get rid of it to restore native prairie lands.  Good news for turners, I guess.

I live in the state of confusion, better known as Belize.
Mahogany, tropical cedar, zeracote [sp] nargosta, black poison wood, mango, salaam, etc etc
This list is almost endless. Turning here for 20 years and still finding new, beautiful wood.
Hardest part is the names, English, Spanish, and the geographical change when you move from one area to another.

You must have some great wood there, I am starting to appreciate my local free wood but I would love to have a truckload of exotics too.

Bob is so hard up for wood that he has taken to cutting trees down for the wood.  Like this Mango with a few burls on it.
