Another Dumb Question Withers on the Vine

What are the dangers or reasons not to install 8" wheels on what was purchased as a 6" grinder if there is adequate clearance? Smiley

Mostly it would be the issue of putting some thing big on some thing that was designed for some thing small. The motor and bearings are not designed for that kind of over load. Kind of like turning outboard bowls on a mini lathe. You probably could do a few, but if you want to do a lot, you will destroy the lathe.

The biggest reason is that the wheel guards and the tool platform will not fit.  Most 6" grinders have smaller shafts.

At least it's not a dumb question any more. I was thinking that the reduced speed might be an advantage.

Jack, I'm pretty sure the speed at the shaft is the same on a 6" or 8" grinder. In most cases, that's 3450 rpm, but some "slow speed" grinders (like the one from Woodcraft) run at 1725 rpm. Keep in mind that for any given rpm, the surface speed (inches per second) on an 8" wheel will be faster than that of a 6" wheel.

And why was she your favorite? It looks like you weren't concentrating on the math.  Roll Eyes

The big thing I see is that the tool rests and the covers are built for a 6". You might even have an issue with clearance with the table if you take the covers and tool rest off. The motor may, or may not last long but then it gives a good reason to take to the minister of finance why you need to get a new grinder and while you're at it, you should get an 8" grinder to go with the spare disks you've recently purchased.

Jack, Woodcraft has a grinder on sale quite often, it has a 80 & 120 grit white AO wheels perfect for turning tools. I own one & it has worked perfectly & is about $100 or less on sale

I have thought about that possibility myself. Since it's hard to say what problems could arise(including possible overloading the motor with heavier wheels) I think it's better to just buy a 8 inch grinder. I have seen what an exploding grinding wheel  does  and it was not pretty at all. I am glad it was not me with a big gash down half my leg.

Chuck, if this is the one I'm thinking of it's also used at the John Campbell Folk School for their woodturning classes.  I know they get a lot of use---and abuse---there and seem to hold up very well.

Of course, if you have the CBN grinding wheels, there is no need for wheel covers, and no risk of them blowing up ever. Safety instructions with my Baldor grinder said to stand out of the way for a few minutes after starting up the grinder for the first time because the wheels might have been damaged in shipping.

I saw those on a grinder recently and have to admit they are a great idea. I would have to look into cost but I would go that way myself. I would think they would last years.

I thought they did a great job at John Campbell.  I can tell ya' using it with a Wolverine Jig talked me out of a Tormek system.
