Tool Gloat - New Crane for my Wood Trailer
05/03/12 at 09:49:50

I found this pickup truck crane at HF on sale and thought it would work great for getting logs onto my trailer easier.

I had a plate welded on the tongue to the box and bolted it to that. That way I can move it to my larger trailer when needed. But most of the time around town this trailer is big enough.

It dragged then picked up this 350-400lb chunk of wood with no issues. I thought it would tip the trailer over, but it didn't budge.

I was able to get it to tip by trying to do so. I wanted to know how far I could push it with no trouble. I think it will work even better hooked up the trailer hitch and with a couple logs on the trailer.

That looks great, Tom. Your perception of what you can take home is going to change now. Wink

My pickup came with a 1000 pound lift gate installed on it. When I got the truck, and it sure changed my way of looking at roadside wood.

Today someone walked into my office and asked me if I wanted 8 trees, the smallest is "about 3 feet wide", it's already begun!

Tom -  it looks like you have a jack stand or similar support on the tongue of the trailer right next to the crane --- sound safety measure.  If it is one of those that pivots, consider having a jack stand under the crane also.   One of the big boat guys here had one of the pivoting kind pivot at a bad time.......

Great tool and adaptation.  Well done!!!

Hi Ken - That support leg in the front is a tube in a tube.

One short tube is welded to the trailer and another tube slides inside of it with a foot on the bottom, then it's locked in place with a 1/2" dia pin through both tubes,  nothing to swivel.  I understand your concern.

The leg is only abouit 1" away from the crane, so it's pretty well positioned.

For really big stuff I plan to take the sides off the trailer and use them as the ramps they are designed to be.  Then I'll pull the log directly up the back and onto the trailer, when the trailer is all hooked to the trailer hitch of course.

Good idea, if you get wet wood even a small piece is surprisingly heavy.

Tom you beat me to it. I am building a trailer with that same lift in mind. I built a ramp on the back of my trailer that lays down. I figured I could drag those big logs onto the trailer right up the ramp. I also have an idea of putting a 12V winch on that will pull around 3,000 lbs so I wouldn't even have to crank. How do you say lazy or maybe save the back. lolk

Cool idea, set the winch alittle high if you can so it doesn't drag the cable across your ramp and get hung.

That was my idea Wizzy. Just raise the arm some and then if my idea works having a remote on/off switch that I can have in my hand I can always guide it some.
