Not sure what was edited out in the post above but I don't believe I said anything bad or innappropriate. Anyways, here a couple pics of the first piece from the wood. I didn't know I still had any tooling marks on the outside till I resized these pics this morning. Definitely have some more sanding to do. Maybe the pics will help someone identify the species.

This might be totally wrong because I can't tell if the dark color is the wood or Spalding etc, but it reminds me of some black locust I had. It is nice whatever it is.

Not black locust, or any other kind of locust, based on the bark.  More likely holly or aspen.
Cool

Looks a lot like Magnolia that has spalted.  The worms are familiar also.

The wood does look like magnolia, but the bark doesn't look anything like magnolia, at least not the magnolia we have here.

I'm thinking I'll call it Magnolia. There's a Magnolia around just about every corner in this area, and I can't say I've ever seen a Holly in person, not that there aren't any in the area, but I've just never noticed any.

After doing some research this morning, (while I should have been working), I think I'll need to spend a little time with my Dremmel and a little patience and clean out the worm holes. Still undecided it I'll just leave them, or fill them. If I fill them, I would most likely use some sort of crushed stone. Some shade of maroon comes to mind....maybe...maybe not...

I usually pic the "stuff" out of the worm holes with a dental pick. I rarely fill them unless they are in the bottom of the work.

What you've done looks good though.

Pretty much any word with the letters s, u, c, and k in a row gets that treatment automatically by the word filters. Which, in a lot of cases, can really (edited out). Wink
