woodturning competition: LE TREMBLEUR
Jun 3rd, 2012 at 5:16am

I am so happy to be back with you after such a long time.
useless to speak about the past year.... the future is full of fantastic shavings.

I have been at the new Escoulen school in Aiguines (France).  I guess it is the largest turning school in Euope.
on the occasion of the opening Jean François Escoulen organised a competition: turning a "Trembleur"

This was in the past a test for turners.  It was called the "demostration of vituosity"
One has to turn a 1,2 meter piece, with figures of 50 mm separated by a stem of 1,8 mm.....

Trembleur means shaker...  Every tuner is shaking while turning because of the required precision.
In addition, you cannot take the piece out of the lathe without a glass tube...

Better than words, look at the film bellow.

Many thanks for your comments.

Mike
You speak about tool control....
It is true that turning a trembleur requires a lot of concentration.  The candidates turned in public, answered many questions from the vistors, were surrounded by a noisy croud....
They were great!

Gary
No it is not part of the MOF test, too simple
But I can guaranty you that all those who presented themself to the MOF competition turned quite a few trembleurs prior to start thinking of the piece they were to turned at MOF test.

Al right I will admit I have lead a sheltered life.  What is the M.O.F. Test?

Google got me nowhere, I must have asked the wrong question.

We had a demo at the club meeting this weekend on turning a trembleur.  So I thought I'd bring this to the top of the list for a while.   One day I will do this.

Cliff,  here is the Wiki.  to actually   watch   the  test is rare.  the movie "Kings of Pastry"  is  the only time  that I  know of where the  test has been filmed.
