Stabilizing wood
06/06/12 at 10:37:30

I recently received a good amount of Manitoba maple burl, cut some nice bowl blanks out of it and the left overs were cut down to make some bottle stopper blanks and some pen blanks, this stuff I did in a soak of Methyl Hydrate for 24hrs. and is drying nicely. The stuff that is almost dry seems to be very light in weight and am thinking about trying to stabilize these pieces.

My question is about stabilizing, what to use,  whether homemade or store bought, I have tried the minwax hardner but at almost 23 bucks /litre is a little too pricey. I have heard about Cactus Juice, but may be too $$$$ to bring out of the states, anyone in Canada have this stuff ???  Your thoughts ???

Thanks

James

Good morning James,

I've had  good luck with a home made brew of plexiglass and acetone. The plexi is disolved in the acetone. the wood is then submeriged ing the stuff.  I let it sit  for several days just so it sokes in really well.

But, remember to use plexiglass not any othere plastic. anyother will just give you a gooy glop.

Thanks Nic, what consistency do you mix it to, I would assume it would have to be thin to penetrate the wood ??

Thanks
James
