Holding Sandpaper How To ?
06/26/12 at 13:32:33

I saw the "Caution about plywood" thread and wondered myself about holding the sandpaper like a lot of us do in a bowl. Even if it is supported by the tailstock and everything is going good, running true I am uneasy about the what ifs on holding that sandpaper in the bowl as it is turning...I know dont have any rag or anything for something spinning to catch but is there a thing-a- ma jigger that you guy make/use to hold sandpaper and not have fingers in there ? I use the sorby sandmaster on my flutes and it works great but what about the bowls where something like that wont work or fit??

I use the sanding glove from, not surprisingly, the Sanding Glove.com

When I have to sand the inside of the ring bowls I make I usually either have a old med soft rubber pad (like you use on a drill to sand) or I have a small piece of t-shirt material wadded up in my hand under the sandpaper. So any catches get the paper & t-shirt just taken out of my hand. NEVER wrap around your fingers.

I just hold it, folded in half or fourths, in hand. If I use anything, I have some small bits of foam rubber I'll put behind it. The other option is put sand paper on sticks and sanding pads.

I'm not sure what the effective difference would be between the sanding glove and holding sandpaper with a gloved hand other than that the grit is on the glove. I thought gloves and spinning things was a no no.

Using an over sized piece of sandpaper folded several times and not getting parts of your had past the edge would help too.

I bought some inexpensive foam sheets from walmart craft area. They have sticky paper on one side you can take off and put sandpaper on. I like to use them where I sanding voids. They seem to get into some area's better than my fingers alone can too.

When I sand by hand I use a cut up piece of mouse pad and place it between the paper and my hand. I know a few people that use cork in the same fashion.

I use a hemostat with sandpaper folded  several times, especially when sanding the inside of hollow forms or if I'm close to the jaws of my chuck.

Like Ron, I use a closed cell foam pad. They not only are safer, but you also get a better/smoother finish than using just your fingers.
I sent Chuck a set of the pads I use, has he ever used them?

I just cut up sheets into 4 x 4 size. I fold them into 3rds. I just hold them by hand and sand away. I start at 500 rpm and by the time I get to 320 I am down to 200 rpm.
Otherwise I power sand.

Sanding with folded sandpaper and only with your fingers can cause low spots on your turning.

I agree.

I power sand with a 2" disk, then will take a light pass with hand held to remove some of the scratches from the power sanding before I move onto the next grit. My favorite way to had sand is to put a sanding belt on some foam rubber I have and hold that to the work. Most of my hand held sanding is at the higher grits where you don't wear away as much wood.

Generally, I use a sanding disc (hook & loop) on a doohickey from the Sanding Glove.com called a Hand-Held Insulating Disc Holder (although I feel doohickey is a far more elegant term...)

Keeps the hand cool, fingers out of danger, firm enough to get through tool marks but soft enough to fit contours.

I agree with Ron that fingers only can, on soft sections of wood cause low spots. This thing doesn't and I can use the same discs I use when I power sand.
