I am going to start turning a bunch of Christmas ornaments and am going to try a foray into dyes.  Are there any good videos or instructions on dyes.  Also what is the best source for supplies?

I use transtint dyes on most of my turnings in which I either apply with a brush or I airbrush. I get them from Craft Supply USA. I watched Cindy Drozda's Finial Star DVD and at a couple of demo's at Woodcraft.

I like the transtint as well, from either Craft Supplies or Woodcraft. I use a small cloth and and Nitrile glove to apply them, then sometimes sand back and re-apply as necessary to get the even coverage I am looking for. As for videos, I watched Jimmy Clewes. Turn Around. One one series, he does a decorative piece, and the other, he does the rim of a platter. You can look at descriptions and previews of all their videos.

I have little experience, however I did choose the alcohol tinning agent (50/50 mix of denatured alcohol and lacquer thinner) rather than water due to grain raising and the speed of drying.

Transtint is hard to beat for a starting point!!!

Get your basic colors and make a color wheel earn it's keep.

These are not dyes, but I have played around with water colors, and they look pretty awesome when they dry and are sprayed with lacquer, or an oil type of finish. Even a cheap water color set at an art store works. The grain of the wood shows through quite well. Another advantage is that the colors can be very subtle, if that is a look that you want. They are also very safe. Be sure to let them dry well before putting another finish over them.

And you will need to sand after using them as they will raise the grain.
