Got cherry and it turns just fine

OK so I didn't wait long to dig into the cherry I receive a week ago. Here are a couple of the first turnings. I also have two bowl blanks drying.

The first one is a  small natural edge bowl. About four inches tall and seven inches wide. Turned end grain with the bark on the rim. It is warping kind of cool. Soaked in Danish oil.

The second one is a hollow form about four inches wide and about eight inches tall. Also soaked in Danish oil.

I think this might be good enough for Chuck to try out. He should PM me his address and I'll send him a test blank so he can verify my findings.

So with two Chucks, if a woodchuck were to chuck, which Chuck would the woodchuck chuck.

So.... do you suppose that he would be using a NOVA chuck, or would he just be up-chucking?

Nice work and they both are very nice. I also really like the natural edge bowl and transtion of the differant woods.

Really like them both, but like everyone else the natural edge bowl is my first choice...

The bowl has piqued my curiosity, and I'd like to try one.  May I ask (assuming you shaped the outside first) how much of the base (neck and foot) you turned before hollowing the bowl?  I'd be interested in trying to complete the outside first, and not sure how thin the neck could be made before hollowing.  I'd rather ask than duck flying chunks . . .

It can be done that way but I approached this one the way I do goblets.

I first mounted it between centers to put a tenon on it so I could put it in my chuck. Then I hollowed it to the desired shape and depth. After I had the inside completed, I turned the outside to match using a set of calipers to check the walls. The profile for the foot was very close to the face of the chuck because I'd gone deeper than I first intended.

The foot was done by reversing it on a pressure chuck and turning it down to a little nib held by the tail stock.

You could do the outside first and some people do that on goblets as well but I prefer to do the inside and then the outside. Fewer chances of blowing the sides out and making funnels.
