Have you turned green camphor?

I live near a collection center for wood to be chipped. Everyday at noon I go with my chain saw to see what they have. Keyaki, (Japanese elm), chestnut, ash, juniper, cherry... you name it!
Camphor is the most amazing one of all. The smell!! My shop and the whole house fills with the medicinal aroma.
I fill bowls I've made with the shavings and put them around . Nice!

Steve,
Why don't you make some potpourri bowls. All you need is the  bowls you make. Get the lids like these here.

Love to turn camphor.  I have turned it and had to stop half way through to kick the shavings out from under the lathe.  Got too strong and was making my eyes water.  Love the colors and the movement of the grain though.  Has nearly as much character as olive.  If you find you have too much, start shipping it to me.  I love it.
Cool

I have never even seen it but love the smell of camphor. Some woods have a smell that is so nice it's beyond what you wood think a tree could could be.

Enjoy turning camphor very much. It is turner friendly and if you can get the crotches they make great bowls or vases. Perfer the camphor that is more red inside. It usually from a well fertilized yard. Am lucky that the smell does not bother me in the least.  Smiley

I remember when my wife & I went to Thomas Edison's house in FL. He has this massive Banyon tree in the front of it. I wonder what that would be like to turn?

I didn't mean his tree.  Grin

Why wouldn't it be good to turn?

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register is a camphor bowl I turned a while back.  Maybe it will give you a sense of what it looks like.  Can't say it all looks like this, but all of it I've turned looked very similar.  Between the color and the smell of it I think you'll be glad to turn all of it you can get your hands on.
