Advanced Techniques

Anyone here know a website I could go to that'll show advanced techniques for turning.  I see LOTS of neat turnings where I say to myself, "how do they do that?", but I don't know where to find the answer to that question.  I sure would like to go further in my own turning talent and get to be an "expert", but need resources.  Any ideas? or video links?

Reminds me of an old joke..

A young man is walking up Broadway and stops an elderly gentleman to ask: “What is the best way to get to Carnegie Hall?” The old gentleman does not hesitate; he raises his cane and says, “Practice, practice, practice!”

Ask your questions here someone might be able to help.

I'd say you're in the right place to ask. Check out the videos. There's lots of good information there. After that, ask a question. Often there are answers within minutes. I'm sure someone here has done it before and can help out. Besides, I'm sure there are even more who'd like to know how too.

Soon after I joined the forum, I started looking through the long list of videos.  Still can't  believe some of the things that can be turned and are thoroughly demonstrated in the videos.

Bert, I'm not quitr sure what you mean by a "how do they do that?" type project, since I don't know your current skill level or what your interests are. These days turnings with a heavy emphasis on caring seem to be everywhere, just as one example.
As usual, I have to agree with Ron and say practice, practice, practice. If you could be more specific, it might help narrow down the choices. LIke, segmented, pyrography, carved, multi axis, texturing methods, and the list goes on.

Ok, I'm specifically referring to projects exactly like this one.  These types are the one's that I just can't get my head around.  There are others but the one's I'm talking about is this type.  I practice alot, and have improved quite a bit, but to make one like the one below, I need to get a sense of how they get that "open air" section done.

The first thing I would say is send Michelle Rich a message and maybe you could get some answers.
Some turnings of this type, (not this exact one) are made using a router and jig. Rout one side to half the depth, flip it over, repeat, then take it to the lathe for final turning. Others are done using off-center turning in much the same way.
I hope that made sense

Ok, that kindof helps, so I gather the inside of the piece isn't sanded that well, given the limitations of getting sandpaper in there?  or is it two sections glued together?

Sometimes it is one piece as I described  or the two piece method you mentioned. Either way will achieve a similar result.

I agree with Ed

Most times (not all) a project like this is routed halfway through on one side, flip over and routed again going only half way through.

I'll bet there is an awful lot of handsanding as well

Here is something that will get your creative juices flowing.

Thanks for the links.  Ron, I particularily like the Laminated woodturning projects on your link.  That's the kindof thing that I want more tips on making as well as the other more advanced routered things.

It seems the forum software is taking an "e" out of "weebly."  Weebly should be spelled with two e's.
