Make sure you get a Nova brand insert.

While worth asking, many of us have smaller sizes from moving up --  And not a lot of people moving down in spindle sizes.

Presume you are looking for 1 1/4 by 8 tpi insert --   And as Jim advised, stay with NOVA brand inserts to avoid some known problems with run-out from some 3rd party brands.

Buy your insert from Nova.  Woodcraft sells a knockoff.

Actually, Woodcraft sells Nova inserts but sometimes less than educated employees will try to sell a Woodriver insert that has the same threads but does not bottom out properly in the chuck and will cause runout. I teach turning classes at a Woodcraft and they have the proper inserts.

This comes up all the time so forgive me if I interject this into the thread. The easiest way to fix the "non-Teknatool" insert.
1. Cut hole in wood
2. File thread
3. Done
I have used this method on 4 chucks without an issue.
Sorry for the interruption, carry on.

Wow, Ed. I have been reading the posts on the problems with non Nova inserts for years.  Your pictures and explanation were great. And amazingly succinct.

Thanks for posting.
