10% Cobalt HSS

Anyone know where I could get a couple of these suitable for making homemade hollowing tools. I have already sourced the drill-rod, or what we call silver steel on this side of the pond. I had been searching for drill rod but was told its the same as silver steel.

Thanks Jeff. I think I looked there before but wasn't sure what to look for or where to find it.

My experience is that you will pay more for the cobalt than M2 high speed steel but not gain any particular performance.    The cobalt handles the higher heat associated with some tough stuff like cast iron, ductile iron etc.

Silver Steel and Drill Rod are both high carbon steel.  Oil hardening and water hardening are the most common.

Drill Blanks are generally round high speed steel rods  -- think hss drill bit before grinding.

I buy the 10% co bits in a store that sells metalturning supplies.
For the rods I use 1020 steel .(silversteel is also available here but i`ve never tried it)
Ellsworth tools are the best and cheapest hollowing tools ,I only use them for hollowing .

Hi Mauricio. It was your sphere shaped forms on your Facebook page that got me hooked. I meant to send you a message through facebook to see if you had photos of your homemade hollowing tools. I've just gotten two 2 metre lengths of 5/8" silver steel for the shafts of the tools.

Gentlemen -- look for a firm that supplies machinists.   All of these inserts are common stock for any machinist doing metal lathe work.

If you cannot find anything local -- I will mail you a few pieces of 1/4 (6mm) M2 High Speed Steel --  I have no shortage.   I may have some cobalt steel, but expect most is M2.  PM me with a mail address

The thicker rods I use are 1/2 but  thicker ones may be needed for bigger forms.
The 10 % Co Hss square bits are 1/4 for straight tools and 3/16 for bent ones.
I recomend you read Ellsworth book on hollow forms.
If you wish I make a longer explanation on how I make mine.
