Vintage Telephone Challenge
Oct 1st, 2012 at 8:29am

I entered my Walnut Vintage Telephone in the Oklahoma State Fair and got First Place.  If you want a great challenge try turning one of these. Each piece is hollow and the telephone can be turned into a real working phone. I even added the fine details such as the small rubber parts that go where the wire comes out of the base and into the phone, and these parts were real small and were also turned from walnut as well. I used a flat nylon boot string for the cord. Anyone up for the challenge?

Now that's really cool! I would have never thought about making one but I have always like that style phone. Thanks for sharing a nice peace of art and a great idea.

Thanks.  I forgot to mention, there were nine pieces turned and I used a small brass pin to attach the head piece to the stem. This allows the head piece to move up and down.

Nice.

That looks like fun but I don't know how you could make a call. There weren't keypads back then.  Roll Eyes

I like that, Kathy, very much.  I am fascinated with the idea of objects assembled from turned parts, but I still have a long way to go before I can match that.

Kathy, I get to try. I've been commissioned to turn 12 phones for the musical "NO NO Nannette" this year.

I was just thinking about this project.  1, it's cool and I really like every part of it.  You did a great job with every aspect of the project.  But secondly, where did you get the sizes for each of the pieces?  Did you have an old phone to measure or did you find the specs somewhere to go by?  Where you just guessing how large/small to make each piece?  Tell us more please.
Cool
