My shop isnt much of a shop

I will have to post a picture once I get one taken. My shop is not much of a shop really. I got my lathe about 11 years ago and for the past 9 years it has been in storage. Now I live in a rented house with a pretty good sized back patio area. Last Christmas I got a scroll saw and for my birthday last month I got a sander. Finally got my lathe out of storage, so that is pretty much all I have for a shop. I am really learning a ton about scroll saw work and hope to get a better knowledge of the lathe. Well, will show my shop pictures soon as I can get one taken.

My shop is small too but I am moving things around and cleaning out some to make it a bit better. I saw a guy that had a fair sized garage for a shop but he also had a covered and paved parking slab in front of it. He put casters on all his equipment and spread it out under the roofed area each day. Very cool idea for when the weather allowed since he then had a huge shop.

Basically it is a covered patio room which is screened in. It has plenty of room and the Arizona weather is good to be out there most the year.

I am sure I get a bit more rain than you do so I have be sure to cover up. I may be envious of the others with "real shops" but have "MY" shop and until I can get a better one It is still my haven. We dont get rain often, and if we do my shop is a full covered patio. No rain gets in it. But I am sure you dont get 115 degree summers.

A guy can only stand in one place at a time anyway. I have the same lathe. I am getting use to it. Of course I would like a full blown Oneway or Robust, but I can do a lot with what I have.

If I had to work in an outdoor shop I am afraid I would have to pick a different hobby for 10 months of the year. Up here we describe the weather as 7 months of winter and 5 months of bad sledding. smiley=lolk.gif smiley=lolk.gif. Last year I put an IR natural gas heater in the garage.

This year -40 is no problem. The IR heats objects so all tools are nice and warm. smiley=thumbsup.gif smiley=thumbsup.gif

Tony I started out on Craftsman lathe just yours back in '82. It served me well for over 20 years. At one time my shop was a 5 x10 closet of a space. You have to start someplace. It's not the space or the expensive tools. It's what you do with what you have. The jigs you make, the tools you make and most of all the learning of a craft. I have a shop full of tools, jigs and my most favorite are the old ones. An old Delta scroll saw being one of them. So keep turning and have fun!

My shop in my old home was only 177 Sq. Ft. It was wide but not deep...but it did what I wanted, and someday (maybe) you'll be lucky enough to have one built for yourself. My new place I now had a 24'x20' shop built.
