Why I am not turning
Dec 10th, 2012 at 9:51am

EmbarrassedFrom September until Christmas my lathes become orphans.  Carvings sell better than turnings this time of year so I spend all my time carving instead.  Plan to do some carved bowls in the future.  Our 2012 Santa was popular this year and I have 15 more to do by Christmas so its off to the shop to make some wood chips.

Nice work Harold.  I agree with you, you have to use your talents to best support yourself (and our addiction to wood  Wink )

Keep up the good work!

Harold,

I like the 2012 Santa.  Well done.  Do you make a few prototypes each year and then decide which one will be that years?

I just displayed the 2013 for the first time and there are already orders for it.  I carve from scratch what I call a blank that goes in my roughout machine.  I then take the roughouts and the rest is done by hand with knives and gouges.

Harold,  I was asking more along the line of how you decide which style will be the official 2012 Santa.  No so much the process of making it but choosing each year the basic design.

I just pick up a block of wood and keep hacking at it until it looks like a santa that I have not done before. I have been carving these guys for 20 years and usualy it only takes one try.
